Term Research Paper: Assessing a Career in Business
The career path that I chose to research for my personal selection is a business manager.
The reason why I chose this occupation is to grow as a leader and motivate others in a positive
aspect. I feel like I can accomplish these goals while learning the fundamentals of business
management. Growing leaders learn or strengthen leadership principles while helping others
acquire them. I believe I work well with others, especially in a work environment. I consider
myself a flexible and reliable worker. These traits show my strengths as a worker, which I
perform on a daily basis. Becoming a successful business manager acquires many characteristics
which involve the principles of business management. Every business needs someone to lead and
manage, becoming a manager takes a lot of responsibilities and accountability.
The job description of a business manager is someone who oversees the activities of
workers; hire, train and evaluate new employees; and ensure that a company or department is on
track to meet its financial goals, according to Luanne Kelchner of Small Business by Demand
Media. She also states the size of the company can determine the type of activities the manager
performs. In a larger organization, a manager might supervise the team or group leaders, who
then administer the scheduling and output of workers. In a smaller company, the manager might
perform these activities themselves. Managers measure the performance of the department or
company against the businesss goals and proposals. Some business managers perform human

resource activities, such as performance evaluations, hiring and discipline for employees in their
department. Managers motivate workers through inducements and positive feedback. When
workers fail to meet the companys performance requirements, managers provide initial feedback
that can help employees improve their process and procedures. Managers perform these
evaluations which help and ensure the responsibilities of each employee.
Entry-level managers will be able to use the latest technology and management
techniques to organize, plan, and manage human resources, assets, and other business resources
and functions. When youre an entry-level manager, you must demonstrate interpersonal skills,
professionalism, effective communication, leadership, and problem solving skills. A lot of entrylevel jobs are part-time. Usually high school and college graduates are targeted to an entry-level
job. These positions dont require much experience or practice. Entry-level jobs strengthen
graduates in the field they practice and provide knowledgeable experiences. To move past entrylevel jobs, you must know the position you want and stay focused. For a business manager, you
would want to demonstrate your strengths by talking to higher management and knowing the
specific requirements. You should also use decision-making skills and establish an eminent
relationship with others.
Most business managers hold a minimum of a bachelors degree in business
administration. Education and experience are very significant when applying for a business
manager. You must have excellent written and verbal communication skills to direct employees
and lead the department. Education and experience can vary from the size of the organization.
Smaller companies are more likely to hire bachelors graduates, while national or international
firms may require an MBA, or have extensive managerial experience. Business Managers should
be confident in the field of management. They should know accounting, applied decision

methods for business, finance for managers and business ethics. All these skills should be
utilized in an organizational structure. You should be able to understand, recognize, and define
an issue and find a possible solution using valuable resources. A successful business manager
should use of these tools to help define their leadership authority and capabilities.
These professionals typically receive a base annual salary paid in increments. The base
salary excludes other performance-related compensation. The national average base salary for
these jobs was between $40,959 and $74,366 per year, according to Payscale.com. Really the
salary depends on the size of the organization, the geographic location and the area of the
business the manager oversees. Management will also receive bonuses, commissions or other
forms of incentives. Bonuses typically are based on financial growth. Commissions are based on
sales. Along with salary, business managers are also provided benefits such as health and life
insurance, paid time off, as well as paid holidays.
The future of the Business Management field is solid. Which means business managers
are growing each year. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, job openings will grow
nearly 13% through 2018. Managers will always be in demand. Like stated before, every
company needs someone to take control of employees and production. Managers vary from
different positions. With that stated, we conclude that management will always be a necessity.
Every job field has a manager, with a bachelors degree in business management, you can
qualify for any management position.
To further explore the opportunities for my career path, I chose to conduct an interview
with my mother who is a manager at an aerospace and defense company. I also work for the
same company, but for a completely different line. She started twenty-four years ago as a
manufacturing assembler. She later became the lead in her department. Throughout the years she

Tyler 4

developed great leadership skills. She learned to think strategically about what needs to be done,
and how to do it. Her manager would come to her for advice and help. They industrialized a way
to work together. My mother didnt have the chance to get a degree from college. So she had no
educational experience as a manager. She learned everything from her own experiences and
worked her way to become one of the few female managers at our company. Upper management
knew she was the one for the position. Not only does she know everything in her department, she
also is a remarkable team worker and leader. Her employees mentioned her as a democratic
leader, who listens well and understands peoples values. She ensures that all her employees are
heard and taken great care of. I believe she is a noble leader, she knows how to engage others to
perform well. Im proud of her accomplishments. She had the right mindset, she knew she
wanted more, which made her work hard to develop these management skills.
Narayana Murty wrote an article about the pros and cons of becoming a manager. She
states that there are many upsides to being a manager. Managers generally are paid more than
others in the company. They appear to have more power. And the power and pay differences
tend to give the position more status or prestige. A position in management might offer a
chance to pursue advance degree free of charge. Many companies will finance your way through
school, without you paying anything. Plus youll be saving more money, which makes it nice to
enjoy a higher standard of living.
The negative aspect of a business manager is the longer work hours. Higher-level jobs
usually come with longer work hours. Another downside would be legal liabilities. Managers
have legal liabilities that others dont. Managers have to sign documents for approval. These
documents state the workplace is free from harassment, etc. If a manager fails in any of these
obligations, they may be held legally liable. Another thing is ownership. Someone might

Tyler 5

disagree with the manager, which might cause tension. The final decision lies with the manager.
That means the manager has to take ownership to make the decision, whether its right or wrong.
Managers must not let their emotions get the best of them, especially in a work environment.
Like my mother, I believe Im a natural born leader. I have the ability to motivate others
and think strategically. Im great at multitasking, which involves taking several projects at the
same time. No task is ever big enough. I believe with the right motivation, you can achieve
anything. Through education, I can further my analytical skills. I still have a lot to learn. Thats
why I choose college to pursue my career. This class has showed me quite a lot. Ive learned the
fundamentals of business and what it takes to run a successful business. All these factors are
important to me, they help support my target goal. Which is to become a successful business
manager. Hopefully one day, I can look back at this essay, and say I finally did it.
