Nella citta di Cafarnao, in Israele,

viveva un ufficiale dellesercito
romano, un centurione che in
questa narrazione chiameremo
Marco. In quanto centurione, egli
era responsabile di una guarnigione
di cento soldati. Con i suoi uomini
Marco aveva sorvegliato le attivit
di Ges nella citt fin da quando
Egli aveva cominciato la Sua opera
in quella zona. Faceva parte del suo
lavoro. Egli doveva assicurarsi che
quel Galileo non incoraggiasse,
con le parole o con le opere, la
ribellione contro il governo romano.

In the city of Capernaum in

Israel, there lived a
prominent officer of the
Roman army, a centurion
whom we will call Marcus.
Marcus was responsible for
a garrison of a hundred
soldiers. He and his men
had kept watch on Jesus
doings ever since He began
His work there. It was their
duty to make sure that this
Galilean wasnt doing or
saying anything to incite a
rebellion against Rome.

In diverse occasioni Marco aveva

sentito Ges parlare al popolo del
celestiale regno damore di Dio e i
Suoi insegnamenti gli avevano
fatto nascere nel cuore un
profondo rispetto per Lui. Aveva
compreso infatti che il regno di cui
Ges parlava era un regno spirituale
che non rappresentava quindi una
minaccia politica o militare al
governo romano. Sapeva anzi
che, per quanto limpero romano
fosse grande e potente, aveva
indubbiamente bisogno dellamore
che Ges predicava!

But after hearing Jesus

teach the people from time
to time about Gods
Heavenly Kingdom of Love,
Marcus had come to
respect Jesus. He realized
that the Kingdom He talked
about was a spiritual
kingdom that was hardly a
threat to Rome, which in
spite of all its power and
greatness, could stand
to benefit from some of
this love!

Un giorno, un suo servitore si

ammal gravemente. Marc
ricord tutti i miracoli che Ges
aveva compiuto per guarire i
malati, gli storpi e i ciechi,
perfino l in quella citt.
Potr guarire anche il mio
servitore?, si chiese.

Notoriamente, la maggior
parte dei Giudei cercava di
evitare di avere rapporti con
gli stranieri e soprattutto con i
soldati di Cesare. Poteva forse
quel Ges, noto per il Suo
amore e la Sua considerazione
per gli altri, essere disposto ad
oltrepassare i confini razziali
per aiutare un ufficiale di una
nazione che aveva conquistato
e occupato il Suo paese?
Con quella speranza nel cuore,
Marco and a cercare Ges. Lo
trov mentre insegnava; la folla
attorno al Maestro, vedendo
giungere il centurione, gli fece
spazio. Il silenzio si riemp di
sussurri, mentre tutti
cercavano di indovinare le
sue intenzioni. Con grande
sorpresa di tutti, Marco chiese
a Ges di guarire il suo
servitore.

One day Marcus closest

servant became deathly ill.
Immediately he thought of all
the miracles Jesus had done
for the sick, the lame and the
blind and he wondered,
Could it be that He could heal
my servant?
But there was a problem: How
could he, being a Roman,
approach a Jew for help, in a
day when most Jews hated the
armies of Caesar? Could it be
that this Jesus, known for His
love and care for all people,
would be willing to reach
beyond His Own Jewish race,
even to help someone with
whom the Jews were at odds?
With hope in his heart, Marcus
went to look for Jesus. He
found Him teaching a group of
people, who gave way as the
centurion walked toward Him.
The people whispered to each
other as they tried to guess
Marcus' intentions. To their
surprise, Marcus humbly asked
Jesus to heal his servant.

Ges lo guard con

compassione e prontamente
acconsent ad aiutarlo,
chiedendogli di accompagnarlo
alla casa dove si trovava il servo.
La folla ascolt stupefatta
linaspettata risposta di Marco:
Signore, non disturbarti a
venire a casa mia. Non sono
degno che tu venga sotto il mio
tetto. Di soltanto una parola, e
il mio servo sar guarito. Io sono
infatti abituato dare ordini ai
miei soldati, e se dico ad uno di
loro: Vai!, egli va. Se dico ad un
altro: Vieni!, egli viene. Se dico
al mio servo: Fai ci che ti
dico!, egli lo fa. So quindi che se
tu darai semplicemente un
ordine, esso sar eseguito.
Quando Ges ud quelle parole
si meravigli e dichiar ai
presenti: Non ho mai trovato
una fede cos grande in tutta
Israele! Va, e sia fatto secondo
la tua fede.

Jesus looked at him with

great compassion and
readily agreed to help him.
He asked Marcus to take
him to his sick servant. But
to the surprise of the crowd,
Marcus responded, Lord,
dont trouble yourself, for I
am not worthy to have You
come under my roof. Just
say the word and my servant
will be healed! For I am a
man in authority with
soldiers under my
command, and I say to one,
Go, and he goes, and to
another, Come, and he
comes. And if I tell my
servant, Do this, then he
does it.

Now when Jesus heard

these words, He marveled,
and declared to those who
followed Him, I have not
found such great faith, no,
not in all Israel! Go, and
according to your faith it will
be done for you.

Pieno di fiducia nelle parole

di Cristo, Marco ritorn a
casa, dove scopr che il suo
servitore era stato guarito
nello stesso istante in cui
Ges aveva pronunciato
quelle parole.

Full of faith in Jesus' words,

Marcus returned home
where, according to the Bible,
he discovered that his servant
had been healed at the exact
same time as Jesus has
spoken with him.
