Bacardis Strong Commitment to Conserving Water

Over the course of seven years, Bacardi reduced its water usage
by more than 50 percent as part of its Good Spirited
environmental initiative. The company achieved this feat by
implementing a number of different programs the its various
plants around the world. One of these initiatives involved water
condensate capture for recycling and reuse. By installing
recirculated water cooling systems in place of once-through
systems and implementing efficient systems of capturing steam at
most of its distilleries, Bacardi was able to more effectively recycle
the water it already used in the production of premium spirits.
Bacardi also invested in an advanced wastewater reconstitution
program. For example, in Puerto Rico, the company added a
high-efficiency aeration system and multimedia filtration
equipment, as well as advanced UV disinfection capabilities to
restore wastewater quality to utility water standards.
Minimizing water usage also involved a great deal of operational
discipline. Employees pledged to use only the minimal amount of
water needed to achieve a task and refrained from using any
water deemed unnecessary. Bacardi greatly credits the creativity
of its workers for continuing to improve in this area.
