1.
The teacher will introduce the lesson by asking if the students have ever heard of
George Washington, Abraham Lincoln or Benjamin Franklin. The students will begin
adding to their KWL chart.
2. Then the teacher will read aloud the biography of George Washington. (ESOL)
3. From there the teacher will have the class read and I am from poem about George
Washington using the IWB.
4. As a class we will discuss how information from the story was fond in the poem and
how the poem can teach the reader as well as the book.
5. The students will then be assigned either Abraham Lincoln or Benjamin Franklin, and
they will write their own poem.
6. The students will be given a sheet with questions to answer rather than having to take
their own notes. (ESOL)
7. Once the poems are completed students will pair up with someone who did not
research the same person as them and read their poems to each other and discuss what
they learned. (ESOL)
8. Students will rate with understanding of not only the historical figures but also the
process of using books for research on a scale. At this time they will also complete
their KWL chart.
