Content and Achievement Standards

Playing on instruments, alone and with others, a varied repertoire of music

Class Goals and Objectives

Expand concept of air use; become more detailed with breathing exercises
Use scales to develop concepts of sound in unison (balance, intonation)
Develop students sight reading abilities through preparation and reflection
Help ELL develop their comprehension in the music classroom

Materials

Student instruments
Sight reading piece

Procedures
1. Students will stretch, following the motions of the educator.
2. Students will perform the Sun Goddess and metered breathing exercises.
paying particular attention to a relaxed inhale with no tension or capped
breath.
3. Students will sustain a concert B-flat, their attention on balance within the
lower voices of the ensemble.
a. Percussion students will use this time to practice rudiments on pads if
available.
b. Students will be encouraged to listen to the low voices as the teacher:
i. Explains the pyramid of sound
ii. Gestures toward the ear and then the low winds
iii. Uses repetition of phrases such as forte, stronger, etc. to
emphasize that the low winds must be fuller
4. Students will play the concert B-flat scale as notated in the book with an
emphasis on the balance achieved while sustaining the pitch.
5. Students will use the sight-reading assessment sheets to prepare to read a
piece for the first time.
a. ELL students will receive simplified assessment sheets consisting of
mainly key vocabulary terms.
6. Students will discuss important events in the piece with the educator.
a. Students will engage in these events through activities such as singing
and moving.
b. Students will relate known concepts to word charts around the room.
7. Students will CONFIDENTLY sing rhythms and finger along with their parts.

8. Students will perform the piece.
9. Students will complete the sight-reading assessment sheet and discuss
strategies for improvement.
a. ELL students will express to the best of their ability their strengths
and weaknesses during the sight reading
i. These responses serve as an assessment of growing linguistic
skills

Assessment of Goals and Objectives


Assessment will be informal and will be achieved by addressing issues as they
happen with new exercises, making comments only when necessary. Assessment
will also occur at the end of the sight-reading, achieved by students reflecting on
their own performance throughout the piece and strategies for improvement.
