PART 1: SELF-REGULATION AT A PROFESSION LEVEL

Describe what is meant by a self-regulating healthcare profession. What people, organizations,

or things are present in order to make massage therapy a self-regulating profession in Ontario?
Describe their role in self-regulation.
Being part of a self-regulating healthcare profession means that a government creates
rules, guidelines, policies, ethical criteria and educational programs in order to be part of the
profession and to protect the public. These factors may be updated and changed accordingly to
benefit Healthcare in Ontario (Glen, 2000).

PART 2: SELF-REGULATION AT A PERSONAL LEVEL

Describe what is meant by self-regulation at a personal level. How does self-regulation

support massage therapists as individuals? Use examples to illustrate how this might occur.
How might self-regulation contribute to quality assurance? Again, use examples to illustrate
your points.
Self-regulation can be defines as the ability to stay calmly focused and alert, which often
involves but cannot be reduced to self-control (Education Canada, 2014). Self-regulation
supports massage therapists as individuals by controlling our emotions we are able to accomplish
greater challenges.
Self-regulation can contribute to quality assurance by preventing emotions from
overwhelming the therapists thought process, and thereby allowing cognitive decisions to be
made. For example, if a massage therapist is being assessed by the C.M.T.O and is suffering from
text anxiety, the therapist may temporally lose the ability to think due to fear. Self-regulation
would allow the therapist to remain calm and think clearly. Another example would be receiving
a patient with a condition that the massage therapist is unfamiliar with; the therapist may be
nervous and resist performing a thorough massage, whereas self-regulated therapists would
research before providing treatment.
