Resources/Materials

1. Anticipatory Set: Students will begin by filling out the What we know
and What we want to know sections of the KWL chart for The Statue
of Liberty.
2. Introduction: Students will then be asked questions to activate prior
knowledge and to start discussion about The Statue of Liberty (ESOL).
Some of these questions include Where is the Statue of Liberty
located, Who gave us the Statue, and What does the Statue stand
for? Students will be expected to raise their hands to answer a question
or add a comment to the discussion.
3. Next, the teacher will read The Story of the Statue of Liberty by Betsy
Maestro to the students. Students will be expected to listen quietly and
intently.
4. Using the SmartBoard, students will look at a virtual tour of the Statue
of Liberty at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=42yO2FUWL6A
(ESOL)
5. Students will fill out the What we learned section of the KWL chart.
They will also review what they learned about each symbol.
6. As a review of the unit, students will participate in App centers with the
Ipads (ESOL). Each center will be dedicated to apps about each symbol
covered. Students will rotate around the room switching every 10
minutes.
7. Students will take the post-test on Survey Monkey. They will be
expected to achieve 90% accuracy.
