"Concept Mapping using MindMup" YouTube. Kimberloo777.
YouTube, 20 May. 2014. Web. 25 Sept. 2014.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0xPj8NQMynk
This video, more than most I found, helped me understand the basics
of MindMup. Throughout this short video it explains the different
buttons that we can use and how to use them. This clip is so simple to
follow and comprehend. It covers everything that you would need from
how to get onto MindMup, how to begin making your "map", how to
add "children" or "boxes", and how to save your image or map to your
computer to use for your class. This source mainly shows the basics of
MindMup. A child from late elementary would be able to understand
how to use MindMup from this video because it is very basic and to the
point.
"MindMup.com a tutorial" YouTube. Patrick Cauley. YouTube,
16 Jul. 2013. Web. 25 Sept. 2014.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SIdvTMQM-aM
This source is very complicated. Unlike the "Concept Mapping" source
this one is very complex. This is not as basic as some, but is still easy
to follow. This tutorial goes more in depth and explains what more
options there are on MindMup. This video explains more of what you
can do on this website. It explains all different ways of exporting it,
saving it, and how to attach additional information to the site. Overall
this site shows and explains more of the options you can use on
MindMup. This video would not be of much help to elementary aged as
much as older children. This source might be a little over some peoples
heads because they won't use all the options shown. For older people
this is exactly what they need to learn MindMup and all it has to offer
along with quick tips.
"Using MindMup App" YouTube. Tiffany Wynn. YouTube, 14
Aug. 2014. Web. 25 Sept. 2014.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iQ5DVovT93A

The "Using MindMup App" is very basic source to use. This video shows
how to expand and make a map. It shows how to make a complex
map. This source does not go into all the different options that some
did. The best part of this site was that it showed an actual example for
the students who are watching this video. This makes it easier for
students to know how MindMup works. I believe that this site since it is
simple and basic would be good for higher elementary aged children.
This video like I said before is very simple but does not show
everything that MindMup has to offer.

Mindmup Overview:
Written by Samantha Grandgenett, Megan Dubowsky,
Brielle OBrien, and Lexi Taylor
Mindmup is a free mind mapping application that is simple, fast, and easy
to learn. MindMup is available as a free anonymous web service at
mindmup.com, which enables users to store maps on cloud storage
providers, including Google Drive, Amazon S3, and GitHub, and in time will
collaborate with other users.
MindMup was created in January 2013 to create a free and open mind map
cloud service. Mind maps are very simple. You can create one on
paper in seconds, so mindmup is an equally effortless way to do it
online. MindMup is a service that lets you put together simple
mindmaps without having to download anything or open an
account.
When you go to MindMup.com, you first see a default map that
explains how the service works. It goes over keyboard and mouse
use, and includes notes and tips. MindMup requires no
registration, not even when you save your work. You can also
connect it with your Google Drive, or even save to the local
browser storage using HTML5.
MindMup is JavaScript-based, so you don't need to have Flash
installed to use it. The program works best for simple mind maps.
You can change the color, expand or collapse them, and move
them around using the mouse. Motion is accompanied bouncy

animations.
MindMup supports undo and redo operations. Its interface
consists of a top menu bar and a floating toolbar, both of which
can be collapsed. In its barest form, the only thing you see is the
map. To access the menu once you've collapsed it, hover your
mouse at the top of the screen, and the menu will become visible.
Once you want to share your map, you can simply share the link
to MindMup. Anyone clicking on the link will see your mind maps
and be able to make changes, but the changes will be saved in
another copy. They can share that new copy with you if theyd
like.
MindMup combines editing and productivity aspects for desktop
applications, such as keyboard shortcuts, edit history, right-click menus and
IT PROJECT PAGE 3
toolbars, with online application capabilities such as cloud storage, easy
sharing and enabling users to embed maps in their web sites. The software
supports importing and exporting maps. Presentations based on maps can
also be exported as PDF and PowerPoint slides, which is very convenient
for young students.
Overall, Mindmup is a great visual tool that has been praised for its simple
interface and easy to learn layout. It has a very short learning curve, poweruser features, and is generally a joy to use. It is great to use to explain a
concept. Mindmup has been recommended for the use in education,
especially due to anonymous access and not requiring students to sign up
for an account. MindMup is a free, effortless way to create mind
maps in just moments.

Lesson Plan Annotated Bibliography:
By: Brielle O'Brien, Megam Dubowsky, Lexi Taylor, Samantha
Grandgenette

Thinkspiration. The World of Words: Visualizing Vocabulary Retrieved

September 25, 2014 from http://www.inspiration.com/blog/2013/01/theworld-of-words-visualizing-vocabulary-template-lesson-plan/.
The lesson plan will help elementary students second grade and up to
understand vocabulary. Using a Mindmup for vocabulary will help students to
understand the words meaning by finding synonyms, antonyms, and
sentences. Students will be given a word and they will need to find
synonyms, antonyms, and come up with a sentence. This will help them to
gain a better understanding of the word and mapping it out will also help to
have all information in one area. Using a Mindmup will allow teacher to
project projects to classroom so everyone will be able to learn the vocabulary
words. This also allows teacher to emphasize and correct certain words.
Kleinspiration. Using Mind Maps in Elementary. Retrieved September 29,
2014 from http://www.kleinspiration.com/2012/07/using-mind-maps-inelementary.html.
This lesson would be perfect for primary elementary students to help map

a story for understanding. It allows students to pick out the characters,

setting, the problem, and solution from the story. Students will be able to use
this tool to help them follow the story, and it will help teachers to know if
their students are actually gaining knowledge from story. The teacher could
also use this tool to review with the main ideas and concepts within a story
read in class. Overall this is a great teaching tool to help students
comprehend a story.
Preston, Charity. Preston Education Network: Name Maps. Retrieved September
25, 2014 from http://www.classroomfreebies.com/2012/08/name-maps.html.

The name maps lesson is geared toward primary elementary students.

Although this is traditionally a lesson that is done with paper and pen, it is a
lesson that can be adapted to fit classrooms with technology. In this lesson,
the teacher will have students create a Mindmup. In this Mindmup the
students will insert their name in the middle and then add branches that
describe themselves. The goal of this activity is to get to know the student
and explain who they are as a person. This will help the students to use their
creativity while learning the basics of mapping out an idea, object, or word.
Using this lesson plan will introduce the idea of mapping out concepts to get
the bigger pictures in more complex lessons. Although Mindmup is a simple
format it makes it easy for students to use, but also cuts down on their ability
to add creative artwork next to their attributes.

It Project: Evaluating the Program
By: Brielle, Lexi, Samantha, Megan
1.What is this program trying to teach? Or, what educational
value does the program have?
Mindmup is trying to teach students how to generate ideas and
organize
information. They could do this just as easy on a
piece of paper, but because of
Google Drive, it is allowed to be
shared, that way everyone can see it, or make
changes to it,
for example in the classroom as a project or assignment. You can
customize your map, change the color, expand or collapse them,
and move them
around with the use of the mouse. You can also
add motion, and add animations.
The educational value that
the program offers is that it encourages group and
teamwork

so they can build character within the students and classroom. The
program offers a new way of visual maps that are easy and
can be done
individually.
2. Software Quality Evaluation:
Ease of Installation: 5 (Great) The installation step within
this tool is fairly
easy. You get onto Google drive,
and go to apps and install it. You do
not have to
have an account, or wait hours for the app to download.
The type of computer does not matter and it was a
basic two step
installation, and that is why we
gave it the Evaluation of a 5
Ease of Initial Use: 5 (Great) When first looking at Mindmup,
it looks so
simple and basic, well it is. You just
start your map anywhere you want
and add to it, and
then customize it, there is not any complexity to it.
Ease of Overall Use: 5 (Great) After working through all of
the things
Mindmup has to offer, the overall
use is even simpler. All often
available
icons are labeled easily so you know exactly what they are. It
is so simple, that you can only really complicate
it yourself by the
information you put into it.
Graphics Quality: 4 (Good) The graphics quality of Mindmup
is set up
perfectly. It's very clearly that your
map will be placed on the left, and
you can add
things by clicking on icons in the toolbar. It is very
organized, with simple navigations, and that's why
the rating got a 4.
IT PROJECT PAGE 6
Ease of Key Functions: 5 (Great) The key functions on
Mindmup are pretty
self-explanatory. Each one
has a label, and a picture representing what
it is.
You point-and-click, and receive what key you have pushed.
Level Of Intuitiveness: 5 (Great) This program isn't filled with
a ton of erotic
features, but it does let you

change the color, expand or collapse your

map, and
customize it as well. It is very straight forward in how to use
it and that is wh hit got the rating of a 5.
Helpfulness: 4 (Good) With Mindmup, there isn't a whole lot
that the program
could instruct on. With it being so
simple, and user friendly, you can
experiment
with it on your own to figure out how you are going to
make you map exactly how you want it.
a.) Does this program require you to set- up an account?
Yes NO
Mindmup does not require one to set-up an account to use
the software.
Although Google Drive is a place to share
and use Mindmup, it does not
require an additional
account.
b.) Is everything about the program free or are there
"Pro" Features,
meaning additional features that
you only get if you pay for them? If there
are pay
features, what types of features do you have to pay for?
The simple version of the software is completely free, but if
you want to
upgrade to export larger maps then there is
a cost associated with that.
There are two forms of the
software that can be downloaded at a cost.
These would
include, Mindmup Gold(private) and Mindmup Gold (Public).
When researching these options, I was able to see that the
benefit of these
programs would be the additional space for
larger maps.
c.) What is the best software component of the program
(i.e ease of use,
sharing options) and why? In other
words, what is the best feature of the
program and how
does it make this program unique?
Adding a storyboard option would probably beth the best
feature wtihinthe
Mindmup program. The program in
general is very basic and simple, but
storyboards make the
process and the map interesting and unique to the
program. Storyboards give students yet another visual to look at
and engage
their attention. This will increase the likelihood of
students remembering
content.

IT PROJECT PAGE 7
d.) What is the weakest software component of the
program and why? In
other words, what is the hardest
or most difficult part of the program to use?
We found it hard to find and use all the available tools
within the Mindmup
software. When using the program, it
was difficult at times to know how to
exactly make
something happen that one would want. For example, it took
a bit to figure out exactly how to turn the portion which is
one of the major
benefits.
3. Age Appropriateness
a.) What grade level would this program work well with?
You can either
research this answer to take your best
guess. Just make sure to explain why
you choose the
grade level you did.
Mindmup could be considered a great use for almost any
grade level. Even
in the earlier, Elementary classrooms.
There is a very short learning curve
for this program. THis
is because it is so simple and self-explanatory. The
only
way you could complicate it, is if you were to make your Mindmup in
a complex version. However, it is so simple that it
might not keep the
attention of younger children, they
may find it boring in other words.
4. Functionality
a.)Does the program do what you want it to? If so,
explain. If not, explain.
Yes, it is a great program. It is fast, simple, and doesn't
require a download.
However, there is difficulty in adding
extra information into the nodes
provided. It is a quick way
to explain a concept and leaves very little room
for error.
5. Fun Factor
a.)Does the tool allow you to be creative during the
learning process? Explain.
Yes! It allows you to be very creative. You can change the
colors of the
nodes, and add pictures, or clip art. You can

make it as unique or as plain as

of options within its toolbar.

you want it to be. It offers plenty

b.)Does the tool allow you to demonstrate creativity in

the learning product?
Explain.
As I have said many times before, it is so simple hat it
doesn't seem like
something that could provide
creativity, but I think that because it is so
IT PROJECT PAGE 8
plain, it requires you to think outside the box to make your
map creative.
c.)Does the tool provide opportunities for different types
of interaction
(visual, verbal, written)? Explain
Yes, it provides a source of visual, allowing you to share it
with other
people, and also the fact that you can bring in
your own pictures for your
map. There is no voice capability
however.
d.)Does the tool encourage collaboration? Explain.
It seems to provide a good source of interaction, depending
upon how you
use it. For example, the students could
share their map with classmates, and
then the classmates could
add onto their map, saving it as a new map
however. It
is very easy for you to share it, and get possible feedback,
quickly and easily.
6. Overall Thoughts
Overall Rating: 4 (Good)
a.) Is there anything about the program you'd like to see
changed?
I don't think anything needs to be necessarily changed, but
maybe add some
color to the actual app. It seems boring and
simple that I don't think it will
catch come one's attention
right away, unless they are told to use it within
the
classroom setting. Also I think they need to advertise it better, it is not
a
well-known app. Make it stand out! Promote It!
b.)Would you use it in your own classroom? if so, why? If

not, why?
I would definitely use it in my own classroom. For starters, it
is free! Also I
am not a person who is huge on
technology, therefore, this app came very
easily to me. It's
fast, simple, and easy, but most of all very useful. Perfect
for a story board type of map, or an easy way to get an important
concept
across to students.
