STUDENT TEACHER FIRE UP CONFERENCE!
Aquinas College
Monday, October 20, 2014
This professional conference provides you with an opportunity to engage in new learning. We
hope that during this day you will learn information from our presentations that will help you
become a more effective educator, as well as meet and interact with colleagues from other
universities and colleges. Presenters at this conference volunteer their time and expertise. Please
take a moment to thank them as you leave each session.
There are five sessions during the day. You have the opportunity to select
four sessions and either A (10:30-11:30), or B (11:45-12:45) lunch.
Lunch is provided in the Cafeteria, located in the Wege Student Center
( on the campus map) and you may choose to eat there or take a sack
lunch along with you to attend all five sessions.
As you network with peers and colleagues, choose those sessions
which appeal to you and take the opportunity to share information
about topics you are not able to attend. Check out: www.itec-wm.org

A seminar exploring improving critical thinking in children by fostering expressive problem-solving methods. Ryan
Hipp is Michigans leading authority on creative problem-solving in education. Ryan discusses the relationship
between creativity and true learning and how to navigate with common core in mind. He will share how to identify
creativity killers that hinder students emotional, social, and educational development. Using facts and research,
examples will be shared of common misconceptions, Problem-solving methods like synectics and ratiocination, and
how to identify when we are inhibiting creativity & free expression and not even realizing it and most importantly,
how to break the chain to positively reinforce our students creative sparks.

Learn History By Doing History: The Michigan History Day Contest

Come learn about a program for teaching history authentically. The National History Day program has offered
millions of students the opportunity to learn history by doing history. NHD is a competition for Middle and High
school students. They may create history entries, such as documentaries, papers, exhibits, performances, or websites,
for the competition. Winners have the opportunity to compete at the state and national contests. Thousands of
Michigan students enter the contest every year and hundreds of thousands compete across the country. Free
