Hinsdale Central High School Foundation Grant

I have chosen to apply for the Jodie Harrison Memorial Teachers Grant put forth
by the Hinsdale Central High School Foundation. This grant provides funds for
professional development for teachers and to better educational programs and
opportunities for students. The grant does not indicate a monetary level that they will
support nor does it stipulate a determined amount they will fund. I have asked for a total
of $4565.85 to cover the cost of three MacBook computers and specific software as well
as a service and support package to cover the equipment for three years. This rationale
behind this request is to better support students who use a Mac computer product at
Hinsdale Central, which is a PC environment. The fulfillment of this grant will allow
students to have an opportunity to convert their files if necessary to be compatible with
the computers used by the school. It will also allow for teachers to check out MacBook
computers for students who wish to present their projects/presentations in their native
Mac formats and remove the worry of compatibility and the loss of instructional time due
to troubleshooting such issues.

HINSDALE CENTRAL HIGH SCHOOL FOUNDATION

Dear Teachers:
The Hinsdale Central High School Foundation is again accepting applications for the
Jodie Harrison Memorial Teachers Grant. The purpose is to enhance professional
development opportunities for teachers at Hinsdale Central and to enrich and enhance
educational programs and opportunities for all students.
Attached is an application (also posted at hchsfoundation.org), which must be completed
and returned to the Hinsdale Central Foundation, P.O. Box 296, Clarendon Hills, IL
60514 or to the Principal's Office no later than March 28, 2014. We expect to notify any
grant recipient(s) by May 2014. Recipients will be formally recognized as part of the
Teacher Luncheon in June.
Funding will be based on the following (and possibly more): Sustainability, visibility,
measurement of success, and what portion of the student body will benefit from this
proposal.
As you prepare for this Grant Application, please check with the Principals
Office and with the Director of Technology, Tim Hohman, to make sure that there
are not plans already in the works to fund a similar idea, or that there are not
better ways to purchase items in your grant.
If your grant is funded, the Foundation respectfully requests you provide a report that
summarizes the results/progress of your particular project no later than a year from date
of award, or earlier if appropriate.
Thank you for your efforts on behalf of our children. Keep up the great work!
Sincerely,

Robert T. Mortimer, Jr.

1 PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Hinsdale

Central Library Media program works with classroom teachers, staff and
students to use technology to advance learning. Electronic devices are an essential
component of Centrals teaching and learning paradigm. However, Centrals electronic
resources are almost exclusively PC-based and require the use of Windows/Microsoft
applications. Problems arise when students create assignments at home using iOS
applications and then try to submit the product to their teacher who is unable to open the
iOS document/project using Windows programs.

In an increasingly digital environment, students rely on the Library Media Center to

support and troubleshoot technology issues. This year, the number of students distressed
by the fact that they could not turn their work in on time because they did not convert iOS
products to a PC compatible format has risen sharply, and has resulted in students being
penalized for late assignments.

Central Library Media Department proposes purchasing 3 Mac Book Pro computers
loaded with Office for Macs software to assist students who create iOS files with
converting them to a PC compatible format. One of the Mac Books will stay in the
Library Media Center and serve primarily as a file conversion station. Teachers will be
able to check out the two other Mac Books so they can offer students access to both
platforms for classroom presentations. Having both a point-of-need Mac workstation, and
the potential to present individual projects using either a PC or Mac format, would
greatly benefit our students, and be an innovative step forward for classroom teachers.

2.

PROGRAM GOALS AND OBJECTIVES

2.1 In addition to extending production capacity, and providing all students with a
safeguard which enables them to create products using a digital platform that best suits
their needs and their task, access to Mac Books would enrich opportunities for our
students. It would also improve the social emotional learning climate by removing the
stress that occurs when students are unable to convert documents needed for class.
2.2 One Hundred per cent of our students will benefit from this proposal.
2.3 The Library Media Center will purchase the Mac Books as soon as funding is
available.
2.4 This proposal will increase the Library Media Centers ability to meet the needs of
our students and teachers by providing them with the ability and freedom to
create/present files in both platforms.
