A broken promise between leader and citizens. To go forward with more detail, Viktor F. Yanukovych
(President) had made a promise to the citizens that hed integrate Ukraine with the European Union. He
was to do this by signing sweeping political/trade agreements. But then in the month of November he
then refused to sign.
Another factor to play its role in leading to chaos is a staying cold war dispute with Russia and West for
influence over countries in Eastern Europe that still are suffering from both political and economical
issues that are rooted in the Soviet era. Although Europe and the US have created a priority of fostering
democracy in previous Soviet republics, the Kremlins are seeing an ulterior motive which is the progress
and addition of the western military and the economic power. Believing it is a threat to the big military
and the economic wants in the Ukraine, Russia decided to exert much pressure to scuttle accords with
the EU.
The final core factor that led to the chaos is searing huge public outrage over the gov.s often brutal
reply to the street protests following the presidents about-face that is tied with the EU. It is said that
the crackdowns immensely contradict Ukraines post-soviet national identity as pluralistic and calming
society.
Why does Russia feel threatened by Ukraine forming a closer partnership with Europe? Russia feels
threatened by the Ukraine forming a closer partnership with Europe because Ukraine depends on Russia
for gas supply, and they are frightened that the business will be taken by the Europe since they
dismissed Russias concerns.
Why did many Ukrainians, especially in the Western part of the country, want Ukraine to sign political
and economic agreements with the European Union? They wished for Ukraine to sign political and
economic agreements with the European Union because they saw the accords with Europe as a symbol
of a bigger push to accelerate and thrive for improving their lives with much importance to have reforms
very much for the economy and the justice system.
Why did street protests erupt in November 2013?
They erupted due to it becoming obvious Mr. Yanukovych refused to move forward.
What were some of the government missteps that helped further fuel the protests? Russia giving Mr.
Yanukovych $15 billion all in loans and for natural gas discounts but then only to be reignited by
government missteps including being beat by cops, and going through new laws intensely restricting
assembly and free speech.
