Dear Parents and Guardians,
I wanted to touch base with our OTHS families as the St. Louis Metropolitan area prepares for
news regarding the grand jury decision on the Michael Brown incident.
‘We all understand the emotions involved in a situation such as this. We recognize that a
passionate response may follow the release of the findings from the grand jury, regardless of
what the findings may be. Our thoughts are with all those who are, and have been, directly
impacted by this incident.
Please note, the safety of OTHS students and employees is always our top priority. The
administration and the crisis management team work directly with local law enforcement to
prepare for any situation that may arise that could potentially disrupt the educational
environment or threaten the safety and well-being of the students and employees in our care. As
always, communication is the most important factor as we work through any situation at
OTHS. The District will utilize email and the “all-call” notification systems should information
need to be disseminated to students, parents, and/or employees.
During the school day, our faculty and staff will continue to create a safe and courteous school
environment that respects the uniqueness of each individual on our campus. Situations such as
this provide an opportunity for us collaboratively, as parents and educators, to model the
appropriate way to talk about difficult or sensitive topics, and to model how to peacefully work
through differences. It is an opportunity for us to be part of a healing process that often needs to
‘occur in times of conflict and controversy.
Our social workers and guidance counselors are always available should students need support as
they deal with adult issues such as this. Please be assured that we are deeply committed to
providing a respectful, safe, and secure school environment for the students we serve.
Yours for Excellence in Education,
Dr. Darcy G. Benway, OTHS Superintendent
