Unit topic: Brazil, 3rd grade

Assessment plan:

Preassessment plan: KWL Chart. Each student will have their own KWL chart sheet. The
students will be asked What do you know about Brazil and its climate?
The students will answer on their own first then the students will be asked to give some of their
thoughts aloud. The students responses will be written on a giant KWL chart on the front
board. The students will then be asked what they want to learn about Brazils Rainforest. Their
responses will then be written on the board to be discussed as a class.

Summative assessment plan:


The students will be asked to describe Brazils climate in each region. Students can choose:
1. Make a poster illustrating and describing Brazils different climates. Write a short
description, giving at least three details about each climate region and what lives there.
2. Make a diorama/model of Brazil, showing Brazils different climates. Write a short
description, giving at least three details about each climate region and what lives there.
3. Write a journal entry if you traveled to Brazil write about: which climate region you
would go, why, and what would you see there? Describe why you would not want to go
to the other climate regions, giving at least three details about each region.

Formative assessment plan:


Students will write on their KWL Chart what they learned each day. Some days we will go over
what they wrote before they leave.
Students will place pictures of animals on the correct layer of the Brazilian Rainforest.
The students will be asked to create a poster or write a journal entry of Brazils rainforest and to
label or describe the four layers: emergent, canopy, understory and forest floor and what makes
up those layers.
Students will identify different climate regions of Brazil on a map.
Students will be asked to judge pictures and classify them to the correct climate.
Students will create a skit as if they were in Brazil and what they would do and see in a certain
climate region.
Students will chart what animals live in which climate region of Brazil and discuss why.
Students will participate in a group discussion about why the rainforest is so important.
Students will come up with a slogan that justifies the need of the rainforest.
