In the North, people were much more likely to have a career in business,
medicine, or sciences than people in the South. 70 percent of the population
lived in the North. There was no slaves in the North, because they could afford
to go with only immigrant labor. They had most of the railroads, and most of
them lived in urban areas. The economy was going up when the Civil War
started.
