Biological Explanations
Humans have a tendency to create groups
Humans delineate groups

-they identify with and value group members

-they are cautious and most likely antagonistic towards
similar groups
-friction and awareness of groups of similar abilities
and interests

We accept differences without hate and judgment
Culture and community attitudes affect a persons

development of respect
Respect is the ability to accept the differences of
others, learn to live with those differences, and value
those that belong to other groups

Developmental Stages
Respect starts at a young age!

-toddlers can be proactive towards each other and babies

-but they can also fight each other and exclude individuals (i.e.
boys only, youre too young, etc.)
Children admire and copy those who are older than them
by age 5, children know what group theyre included in and
understand moral domain
-the difference between behaviors that are right and wrong vs.
conventional
It is the responsibility of parents and teachers to teach children
respect
-because by the time children reach adolescence, theyre attitude
towards other groups is generally fixed

Teaching Respect
When teaching history, the arts, or humanities, there are group

differences to consider
Be mindful of theses different ways to behave towards specific types
of groups:
-political correctness- acting and talking nicely with a particular group
just because of the negativity they have been subjected to in the
past, and to denounce anything negative that may be said towards
the group
-political incorrectness- purposefully saying or doing negative things
toward a group and those who support them
- kiss-up, kiss-down=false respect-flattering those in power and
ignoring others with less influence
Be mindful of how your actions will affect others, especially with
art.
