Kindergarten Reading/Language Arts

SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES TO MEET GOALS

The student will be able to learn one letter of the alphabet each week for 26 consecutive weeks
until the child is able to recognize by sight and sound each letter of the alphabet and be able to
associate that respective letter with basic words.
COMMON CORE STANDARDS

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.K.1.D

Recognize and name all upper- and lowercase letters of the alphabet.

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.K.3.A

Demonstrate basic knowledge of one-to-one letter-sound correspondences by

producing the primary sound or many of the most frequent sounds for each
consonant.
MOTIVATIONAL TECHNIQUES
The lesson will start at the beginning of the week with the introduction of the respective letter of
the week introducing both the shape and sound of the letter. This introduction will be
accomplished by any/or any combination of the following activities: presenting a big poster of
the letter, reading a storybook in association to that letter, telling a story having to do with the
letter, and introducing a fun song with that letter.
MATERIALS NEEDED
Poster board, markers, crayons, paint, paintbrushes, clay, play dough, scissors, magazines,
cheerios, yarn, dried beans, dried noodles, assorted story books (depending on the week), string,
paper, other assorted art supplies and various items to represent the letter depending on the week
PROCEDURE FOR THE LESSON (There will be a combination of the following activities
depending on the day of the week)

Students come in and I sit them on the floor in a circle and introduce/review the letter of
the day using a poster of the letter, asking for words that start with the letter, practicing
the sound, playing various games with the letter, singing a song with the letter and/or
practicing making our bodies into the shape of the letter (20 mins)
Students then go to an arts and crafts station and construct a representation of the letter of
the week using a variety of art supplies, dried foods, or objects from nature (30 mins)
o After they create their letters, I as the teacher would take pictures of their creative
letters and then put the pictures into a prezi
Work on their letter of the week selfie project which is an accordion style piece of
paper that contains the respective letter with pictures, words, artwork describing that

letter all inside a border that looks like a phone. They could find pictures out of
magazines and then cut them out (40 mins)
ACADEMIC LANGUAGE
Associate, describe, discover, confirm
ASSESSMENT METHODS
The students will informally show their mastery of the letters of the alphabet as observed through
their play and if they can correctly identify, draw, and say the sound of the letter on their own
and articulate some basic words that the letter of the week starts with.
