Lipid bilayer
In the cell membrane
Phospholipids are
arranged in a double
layer called a lipid
bilayer
Non polar tails are on
the inside
Polar heads are
facing water outside
and inside the cell
Heads or Tails?
A phospholipid
contains a polar head
and a nonpolar tail
The head is
composed of a
phosphate group,
which is attracted to
water.
This is called
hydrophilic or water
loving
Cell Membrane
The cell membrane acts
as a defensive barrier for
the cell
Its tough and flexible
Formed from a double
layer of phospholipids
The lipid barrier only
allow certain substances
to enter and exit
Selectively permeable
The arrangement of phospholipids in the lipid bi
layer makes the cell selectively permeable
The lipid bi layer allows lipids and substances that
dissolve in lipids to pass thru
Ions, sugars, proteins and most polar molecules
are repelled by the membrane

2. Facilitated diffusion:
diffusion of specific particles
