Role in Distance Education

My role in writing the policy and procedure statements is based on being a Director of the
Curriculum and Instruction Department in the educational setting for a K-12 school district in a
suburban community. The distance education program in my school district is offering hybrid
courses in Math, Science English and Social Students for 6th 12th grade students.
Policy and Procedure Statements for Distance Education
The following policy and procedural statements for distance education are guidelines for our
school district to follow in order to effectively administer distance education courses.
Regulatory Subsystem

The Director of Curriculum and Instruction is responsible for strategic planning and the
leadership for the distance education program.
The Director is responsible for marketing the distance education courses to the
community based on completing needs analysis.
The Director is responsible for maintaining the guidelines for compliance with
regulations, accreditation and financial aspects of the distance education program.

Course Subsystem

We will maintain a help desk that will support the faculty, staff and students 24 hours a
day 7 days a week in order to avoid disruptions in the learning process.
An evaluation of the program using student evaluations and feedback will occur on a
regular basis to allow the instructor and students to evaluate learning outcomes in the
course. This will assist with developing strategies to improve the course and support for
the course.
We will maintain the appropriate licensing operation and management of course systems
to ensure that we comply with the regulatory guidelines.

Student Subsystem

The student support service personnel will provide timely and accurate feedback to
inquiries or requests for support.
The students will have learning outcomes that are comparable to students who are in a
traditional classroom. This will alleviate concerns about differences in the rigor for
online versus traditional courses.
Students as well as faculty will receive technology training & support in using the
software and applications. This will alleviate additional concerns and stress associated
with learning new technology.

Logistical Subsystem

There will be administrative support personnel dedication to technology and


administration of the distance education courses.
Faculty members will complete a training course in distance education prior to teaching
an online course. This will assist the faculty members with the logistics, pedagogy and
management of the distance education course.
The students will have access to student services and additional resources such as the
library in order to have the necessary resources required to support learning outcomes.

Accessibility Subsystem

The courses offered will comply with the regulations in accordance with the Americans
with Disabilities Act.
We will focus on actively recruiting individuals from underserved populations to
participate in the distance education programs.
We will use software that eliminates barriers and provides opportunities for everyone
based on compatibility with assistive technologies. This will enable us to allow us to
adapt to the needs of everyone. According to Bill Gates, the rational is accessible
technology eliminates barriers for people with disabilities and it enables individuals to
take full advantage of their capabilities" (Microsoft, 2014)
