Course Overview
Students make the transition from edited and graded readers to original works by several
German authors. Articles from German publications are read and discussed. In the
previous year, material centered around culture and geography. In German IV the focus is
on literature and Germany history from the 1930s up to the social issues facing Germany
after reunification. Vocabulary building and a greater emphasis on idiom play predominant
roles in increasing students fluency and comprehension. The curriculum is presented
equally to students, but higher expectations are applied to honors students.

Students will also demonstrate use of acquired vocabulary from course readings and in
teacher prepared assignments as it relates to:

*Biographical information

Required Text
The texts to be used in this course will be teacher selected fairy tales, short stories, poems
and novel as well as articles from current German periodicals. There may be items used
from other sources over the course of the year.

Course Materials
Students are strongly recommended to bring a 2-inch binder or other organizational tool to
hold notes and handouts throughout the year. Students should also bring loose leaf and/or
notebook for handwritten work or notes. A writing utensil will be consistently needed

throughout the year.


Teacher prepared materials will also be used as well as videos, slides, maps, realia, and audio material from various
sources (internet, CDs, etc.)
The textbook Auf Deutsch will be used as needed. When needed, a classroom copy of the text will be available for
students to use.

Homework
Homework will be assigned at various intervals throughout the year. Assignments will generally be posted on
AHSDDeutsch.weebly.com in order to serve as a reminder. This may not always be the case, depending on the assignment,
etc.

Additional Information
Grading Policy:
Assignments, tests, quizzes, presentations, participation, etc., will be assessed through a point system.
Deadlines will be assigned and generally reminders given via ahsddeutsch.weebly.com for homework and other
assignments. Rubrics will often be used to assess participatory activities, etc.
Please be sure to follow all directions when completing work as this can affect the grade.

Language Learning:
If a student has other opportunities to learn about the language or culture outside of the classroom, it will strengthen their
ability in that language over time. If there should be events tied to German language or culture that should arise, and your
student attends, then they will be welcomed to write a short report (1-2 pages) on their experience(s).

Culture Credit:
Students are eligible to complete occasional assignments on the culture of Germany if they should encounter it outside of
class. Students may be asked occasionally to write about and/or present about experience(s) they have had with the
language or culture of Germany outside of class.
