Seeds
_____________________________________________________________________________
Central Focus/Big Idea: Students will identify the parts of a seed.
Subject of this lesson: Parts of a seed
Grade Level: 1st
NC Essential Standard(s):
1.L.1.1 Recognize that plants and animals need air, water, light (plants only), space, food and
shelter and that these may be found in their environment.
1.L.2.1 Summarize the basic needs of a variety of different plants (including air, water, nutrients,
and light) for energy and growth.
Next Generation Science Standard(s):. K-LS1-1.Use observations to describe patterns of what
plants and animals (including humans) need to survive.
Academic Language Demand
Language Function: I chose analyze as they will be analyzing the parts of the by

Scientific Vocabulary: seed, seed coat, embryo, cotyledon

Instructional Objective: Students will be able to identify the parts of a seed by constructing a
bean book. Students will successfully label 2 out of 3 pars of the seed by creating a bean book.
Prior Knowledge (student): basic needs of living/nonliving things
Content Knowledge (teacher): Parts of a seed. Embryo- this is a baby plant
Cotyledon this is the plants food or the seed leaves
Seed coat-this is what protects the seed.
Accommodations for special needs: We will make an anchor chart highlighting new words to
help our ELL students.

Materials and Technology requirements:

Lima beans
Paper towels
Glue
Bean book and labels
Book Oh Say Can You Seed
Total Estimated Time: 30 mins
Source of lesson:

Safety considerations: Students will be instructed to NOT each the Lima bean.

Content and Strategies (Procedure)

Engage: Teacher will complete an anchor chart-Today we are going to be talking about seeds
but first we need to learn some new Scientist words:

Dissect-this word means to take apart.

Embryo- this is a baby plant
Cotyledon this is the plants food or the seed leaves
Seed coat-this is what protects the seed.

Teacher will begin by reading page 6 stopping to ask the following questions: What is a seed;
have you ever eaten a seed; how can we use seeds. Read page 7 stopping to allow students time
to respond to the question at the end of the page (Plants are so useful to me and you. Can you
think of the ways? Continue reading until page 13
Explore: We will make a math circle and I will explain that today we will be dissecting a seed
today. Explain that dissecting means to take apart and show the students a lima bean and show
them how we are going to dissect the bean at their seats. In just a moment you will receive your
lima bean seeds that have been soaking in water which makes it easier for us to dissect but first I
want to show you how to dissect the seed. (Model this in the math circle.)When you receive this
seed it is very important to pay attention to the different parts of the bean. As we dissect the bean
we will set each individual bean part on your paper towel so you can see each one individually.
Hand each student a paper towel and have them sit at their deck to wait for their Lima bean.
Once the students have had time to explore we will transitions back to the carpet (lights off) Ask
students what they discovered.

Explanation: Read first paragraph on page 14 show students the embryo on the dotcam that we
dissected together earlier in the lesson. Explain that the embryo is the baby plant. Read the next
paragraph about the cotyledon show the students the two cotyledon. Finally read about the coat
on page 15 and point out the seed coat (Point all of these out on the dotcam from the seed I
dissected earlier).
Elaborate: Explain to the students that we are going to be making bean books today so that we
can practice what we just learned. I will model this using the dotcam. As I am modeling this I
will ask the students
1. What was the outside covering of the seed called? Seed coat
2. What are the two halves of the seed called? Cotyledon
3. What is the baby plant called? Embryo

As I hand the books out to those on the carpet they may go to their desk to complete them.
Early finisher may read a book quietly at their desk.

Evaluate: This lesson will be evaluated informally through the students bean book.
