Draught system :

Draught is the difference in pressure of the combustion products within the boiler furnace and
the cold air outside the furnace (ambient air), the function of a draught in the boiler system is to
To force adequate air into the boiler for achieving complete combustion
To suck out the resulting flue gases from the boiler
To vent the products of combustion after heat recovery in the economizer and superheater
and GAH ) to a high enough level in order to prevent accumulation of these gases .
Draught can be classified into two types 1) natural draught ,2) and mechanical or artificial
draught as the name implies natural draught happens naturally because the density of the hot
gases is less than the density of the cold air hence atmospheric pressure will push hot gases
outside the furnace but these type of draught wont be apple to generate sufficient static draught
(250 mm 300 mm of water column) as its required by large power plants in addition to that
natural draught is also affected by ambient temperature as the following equation shows
hmmW = 176.5*H/TAir .
Where Tair = absolute temperature of air ,hmmw= draught in mm of water ,H = the height of the
chimney
In mechanical draught however the difference in pressure is created mechanically by means of
fans and blowers and sometimes jet steam

In al-mukha power station the mechanical draught of forced type is used as a draught system
where a fan is installed upstream of the boiler and air is forced to pass through the furnace, and
all the heat recovery equipments , it consists of two FD (forced draught) fans so the boiler
system works positively i.e. above the atmospheric pressure .
