Basics of Explosion Protection

Contents
1. The Basic Physic Principles and Definitions of
Explosion Protection

3. Technical Principles
4. Conclusion

Introduction
Chemical, petrochemical, mineral oil and natural gas,
mining sector and many others.
Gases, vapours, mists escape during production,
processing, transportation and storage and during many
processes flammable dusts also are created, form an
explosive atmosphere with the oxygen of the air.
Result in severe harm to human life and property.

1. The Basic Physic Principles and Definitions of

Explosion Protection
Three conditions for fire or explosion to occur.

For an explosive atmosphere to form, the flammable

material must be present in a certain concentration.

2. Statutory Regulations and Standards

European Directive
Directive 94/9/EC (ATEX 95)
The directive applies to all industrial potentially
explosive areas including mining, and also covers dust
explosion protection.
Electrical and non-electrical equipment, and protective
systems.

Certification and Marking

Equipment for use in hazardous areas has to undergo the
conformity assessment procedure.

3. Technical Principles
Explosion Groups and Temperature Classes
Apparatus are divided into two groups:
> Group I: Electrical apparatus for mining.
> Group II: Electrical apparatus for all remaining
potentially explosive atmospheres.
