Newtons Second Law

_____________________________________________________________________________
Central Focus/Big Idea: Forces in Motion
Subject of this lesson: Newtons Second Law of Motion
Grade Level: Fifth Grade
NC Essential Standard(s): 5.P.1.1 Explain how factors such as gravity, friction, and change in
mass affect the motion of objects
Next Generation Science Standard(s): MS-PS2-2. Plan an investigation to provide evidence
that the change in an objects motion depends on the sum of the forces on the object and the
mass of the object.
*Even though students are not creating an investigation they still need to understand that
motion and force are closely related and they will be providing evidence of their findings
through their math problems.
21st Century Skills: Communication- Students will need to interact with peers by way of
discussing and also vocalize their ideas throughout this process.
Critical Thinking and Problem Solving- Students will need to think critically about the problems
they are posed with and also apply this skill with attempting to solve these problems.

Describe: Students will be describing their answers in terms of their appropriate units and
also how they reached their answers within their groups.

Instructional Objective: Students will be able to understand Newtons Second Law of Motion.
They will be able to do this by first working as a whole class, then as a group and lastly
individually in order to test their knowledge of being able to apply what they have learned when
working with the appropriate equation. In order to be successful students will need to complete
the final problem on their own and give the correct answer.
Prior Knowledge Since this lesson plan talks about Newtons Second Law of Motion, students
should already know what his first law states and be able to recall that off of memory.

Content Knowledge (teacher): As well as the students, the teacher of this lesson needs to have
prior knowledge of the three laws (or at least the first two) and anticipate the confusion students
may have.
Accommodations for special needs: The students who are identifies as EC will be placed into
groups of students who are on other levels than their own in order to make sure that they will
receive the content needed. The Circle Method serves as an accommodation due to it being an
easier way to solve for those who struggle.
Materials and Technology requirements:

PowerPoint that was created to carry out this lesson which also contains all the links of the
material embedded into the corresponding slides.
SmartBoard
Pencils
Paper/Science Notebooks
Index Cards

Total Estimated Time: One class period

Source of lesson: Self-created
Safety considerations: Students will need to remain seated throughout the whole lesson in order
to ensure the safety of the class at all times. Even though students will be solving problems from
flashcards, they have been cut out for them prior.

Engage: Part One: Students will be shown a video that discusses Newtons Second Law of
Motion in order to get them ready to discuss/explore the topic.
Part Two: Following the video, as a class we will complete a chart discussing what we know
about Sir Isaac Newton or what we already know about the laws and on the other side of the
chart we will list examples that help us or will help us understand these concepts.
Explore: Students will be given a comic strip discussing Newtons Second Law in which they
will go over it and post about what they saw and did on the back of the page.
Explanation: Within this section I will further explain how this law is used and applied within
our real life. Students will be given the example of baseball and be shown how they can use an
easy and short algorithm to solve these problemsThe Circle Method, by also going over
the units these parts of the equation are normally measured in.
Elaborate: Students will complete a sort from Quizlet.com which on one card they are posed
with a question and they need to figure the problem with their group members and find the
matching card with the correct answers.
Evaluate: Formative Assessment: While completing their sort I will walk around to gage student
success through question asking. If some are showing they are struggling I will offer support by
getting to know what they already understand and going forward from there. This will also be
done with those who may not be showing difficulty.
Summative Assessment: All students will be given a problem to solve (Yay or Nay) they will
complete this on an index card and turn it in that way their mastery can be measured.

Assessment Results of all objectives/skills: Out of 22 students who completed the final
assessment question only two students got the correct answer. I believe it turned out this way
because there was a decimal in the problem which confused the students on how to solve the
problem since they probably focused on the decimal.
