Devices
In this section, fill in the information below about each method of storage. Include relevant diagrams under each
heading. Delete this red text when youre done.

Magnetic Storage
Definition/Characteristics: Magnetic storage is a way to store large amounts of data and has been imprinted using
magnetic disks, and hard drives

How it works: tiny little magnetic balls that help read storage
Examples of Devices/Media: storage devices and hard drive

Solid State
Definition/Characteristics: is a non-volatile storage device that stores data that doesnt disappear on solid state or
flash memory.
How it works: Unlike magnetic hard drives, solid state hard drive doesnt have no moving parts and do not rely on a
magnetic field
Examples of Devices/Media: Like a memory stick, there are no moving parts to an SSD. Rather, information is stored
in microchips.

Optical
Definition/Characteristics: it is a laser that bounces off bumps and thats how you get 0 and 1
How it works: it is a laser that bounces off bumps and thats how you get 0 and 1
Examples of Devices/Media: dvd blue rays cd

Storage Methods
Youve looked a lot at storage methods and what storage devices are used for. But you havent looked at how the
data is actually stored and accessed on a device.
Answer the following questions:
1. What is SEQUENTIAL storage/Access?
In computing, sequential access memory is a data storage device that read their data in a sequence
2. Give one storage device/media that uses the sequential method of file storage
Sequential access memory is used for storage in general purpose computers
3. Give one advantage and one disadvantage of sequential method of file storage
A advantage is that it does it in sequences so it is faster than normal storage one disadvantage is that it can
affect your files and it can update them or delete them
4. What is Random Access? Random access memory is when any one can access the files
5. Give one storage device/media that uses the Random Access method of storage a usb uses ram
6. Give one advantage and one disadvantage of the Random Access method of storage the disadvantage is it
can be deleted easily and anyone can access it the advantages are it is very basic and standard

Backup
What is the definition of Backup?
Backup is when you save it in a different place so it doesnt get deleted
What is the difference between Backup and Backing Storage?
Backup is when you can chose what you back up and backing storage is when it does the whole storage device Give
two reasons why backups should be used/made So that stuff isnt randomly deleted in the middle of work
