Installation Related Information:

Networker for Solaris CDROM contains the normal Solaris packages, which can be
installed using the pkgadd command.

For detailed information about the Legato Networker product packages

information you are requested to go through the roadmap documentation (819-
0289-10-Roadmap)

1) Descend in to the (CDROM) directory, which contains the installation packages and
execute the following command.

# pkgadd –d .

This will install the Legato Networker backup server / storage node / client packages in
the system. We need to get the information about the packages installed using the
following command

# pkginfo –i | grep <networker_package_name>

For detailed information about the installation process you are requested to go
through the installation documentation (819-0287-10-Installation Guide).

Legato Networker Configuration

1) Execute the following command to open the Networker admin console

# nwadmin

Creating Schedules
2) In the above console click on customize and select schedules

In this create 7 full backup Schedules (Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday,

Friday, Saturday and Sunday). Click “apply” to commit changes.

While creating use skip option on other days. For Ex. If you are creating Monday full
backup schedule mark all Mondays available on the calendar for full backup and skip
option for other days (Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday)
Similarly create other schedules for rest of the days.

By doing this we are completing the schedule creation process.

Retention Policy Creation

3) We need to create the retention policy (Retention policy states that how many
days or month or years we need to retain the data in the tape once the data was
backed up). Go to customize and click on policy.
Click “apply” to commit changes.

For our customer environment 5 days retention is more than enough. This will make the
customer to have last 5 consistent t full at the end of the week. So, that he can go for any
of version (five) for restoration. (Ex. Monday backup will expire at the end of Saturday)

Group Creation

4) We need to create group (based on which the backup can be initialized at a

specified time in order to trigger the backup.) Go to customize on main console and
click on groups
Select no to clones, Enabled to Auto start and start time as 00:00 (Monday full backup
will be initiated on 23:50 Hrs of Monday. The same will (should) get completed before
the business hours of Tuesday.

Similarly create group for Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

By doing this we are completing the group creation process.

Using create multiple option will save some time.

Create Pools

5) Create pools for each day so that we can accommodate Monday backup on
Monday tape, Tuesday backup on Tuesday and so on similarly.

Pool Defn: Pool is a collection of tapes, which can be assigned to groups to which the
clients are bound.

Go to media and click pools

Create pool named Monday and assign it to mondayfullbackup group. Similarly for
Tuesday, Wednesday and so on till Sunday.

Using create multiple option will save some time.

Mark the level of the backup as full, Enable Store index entries as yes and media verify
as yes also mark the devices as /dev/rmt/* as detected at site.

This will end up our pool creation session

Labeling of Medias

6) We need to lable the media as per our requirement.

We need to label the medias under the pool there by assigning a media to a pool. By
doing this we are making sure that the Monday backup is going to Monday tape. Mark
slot one as first slot and slot 1 as last slot since we can have only one tape / pool (Sun L8
– Supports only 8 tapes – 7 Tapes for 7 days and one cleaning tape or one tape for
manual backup)

We need to opt for slot 2 for Tuesday, slot 3 for Wednesday and so on for subsequent
days.

Set lable name as Monday and bound the same to Monday pool, which is referred to
Monday group.
Add Client Hosts

Add client host as shown below and mark the SAVE SET. (Save set is the data of the
client, which should be backed up)

We need to add client for each schedule (Since Each backup should use separate pool
(tape) and cannot be incorporated with other pools.

Ex: Testclient should be added individually to all schedules because of our requirement.
Complete backup cycle in legato Networker an example

Following is the flow or inter-related references:

Backup  Group  Schedule  Pool (Reference group)  Tape

Monday Backup  Monday Group  Monday Schedule  Monday Pool  Monday

Tape

Explanation:

Monday backup will be initiated by Monday group at 23:50 Hrs of tuesday; Monday
schedules will triggered by Monday group, Monday group bound with Monday pool in
turn date will be backed up on Monday tape.

Configuring Devices:

Devices can be configured by using the following command.

# jbconfig

Once all these tasks are done setup gets complete.
