I.

Thesis Statement
i. As a result of the epidemic and panic surrounding the outbreak of Ebola, it is the
responsibility of the United States to help combat the disease and to prevent
the spread of the virus, as well as, any other issues and fears the people may
face from its presence.
b. Introduction

Author, Lailah Gifty Akita
ii. Because I agree with the fact the world needs help to combat Ebola, the United
States should take it into their hands to help combat the disease in West Africa.
iii. Mariam-Webster Dictionary defines Ebola as an infectious and generally fatal
disease marked by fever and severe internal bleeding, spread through contact
with infected body fluids by a filovirus ( Ebola virus ), whose normal host species
is unknown.
c. Case
i. The United States should work to help combat Ebola in West Africa because the
epidemic is causing hysteria throughout the world, as well as killing thousands
of people.
ii. Criteria:
1. High death rate in Africa requires assistance, and in the US there has
been one death and a couple other cases.
2. There are precautions to keep our task forces from getting ill
3. The soldiers aiding in Africa have a low risk of contracting the disease,
so there is no reason they should not help
4. The Ebola outbreak has caused people to panic. It is seen all over social
media, the news, and it is often a topic of discussion in the educational
system
iii. Contentions
1. President Barack Obama stressed at the weekend that the US where
one Liberian national has died in Texas and two nurses who treated him
tested positive for Ebola and the rest of the world should focus on
sending money and assistance to fight the disease in West Africa. The
outbreak has killed more than 4,500 people in the region, mostly in
Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone (The Independent, 2014, October 21)
2. Precautions:
a. Before deployment, service members receive the best
equipment and training.
b. In Liberia, service members' risk is assessed based on their
mission, location and activities. Procedures are in place --

including the use of personal protective equipment, hygiene

protocols and monitoring -- to reduce or eliminate the risk of
Ebola transmission as service members go about their daily
missions.
c. Before service members return home, anyone who faced an
elevated risk or exposure will be identified and screened and all
steps will be taken to minimize any potential transmission
according to international medical standards.(US Department of
Defense, 2014, October 20)
3. Its been shown that this disease is most manifest when handling
bodily fluids -- blood, other sorts of fluids -- and there is no plan right
now for U.S. soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines to do that, Army
Maj. Gen. Darryl A. Williams, commander of the joint task force for the
effort dubbed Operation United Assistance, told reporters at the
Pentagon today by phone from the Liberian capital, Monrovia. (The
Independent, 2014, October 21)
