Loren Stillman: Winter Fruits (Pirouet Records)
NY Culture Examiner
Monday night Loren Stillman celebrated the
release of his CD, Winter Fruits (Pirouet
Records) at Le Poisson Rouge. The
majority of the intimate crowd was unfamiliar
with the new tracks. Having listened to the
entire CD a few days earlier to review, the
prospect of hearing those songs live was
quite appealing to this writer.
Winter Fruits is an excellent album, further
indication that Stillman is worthy of the Loren Stilman at Winter Fruits Release Party/Photo: Cecil Rafe
praise he has received for his gift as a
saxophonist and composer. Joined by an exceptional band on the CD and the release party-Ted
Poor, drums; Nate Radley, guitar; Gary Versace, organ- Stillman was able to sketch elaborate
designs. Each member added a detail, enriching the architecture of the compositions. As a result,
the album, produced by Jason Seizer, is elegantly formed.
Stillman stated during the performance how rare it was to have this configuration together to play
due to busy schedules. As a group they breathed extra life into already vibrant music, moving
between avant and free jazz without hesitation. Poor's complex style was highlighted in “Muted
Dreams’, while Stillman soared in “Like A Magic Kiss”. Radley and Versace nuanced the CD, and
the evening, with lovely fluid subtlety that stood out on the sweet “Puffy”
The best trait of Winter Fruits is consistency. Beginning to end, there is no question of what we
have: this is a direct, complex, well-composed jazz recording. A refreshing treat for the loyalists who
repeatedly declare that real jazz is deceased
