Learning Goal(s)

(Content Standard)

Add, subtract, multiply, and divide decimals to hundredths, using concrete models
or drawings and strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or
the relationship between addition and subtraction; relate the strategy to a written
method and explain the reasoning used.

(Criteria/Look Fors)

Explain the common uses of adding and subtracting decimals

Successfully add and subtract decimals to the hundredth place
Successfully can use models to add and subtract

I want my students to learn how to add and subtract decimals with using their
base knowledge of addition and subtraction and concrete models. I want them to
be able to explain their reasoning on how they accomplished the addition or
subtraction.

During the time that the children are working on the worksheets I
provided I will walk around and see who is comprehending it and who is
not.
When they are asked a question, are they able to answer it correctly, and
are they able to use their advice. This will be presented in two ways,
-one being when I ask question such as, what is a decimal?
-another way is when I am having kids come up to the board to
demonstrate how they completed their problem

(3 min) Introduction: Today we are going to be going over the topic of adding and
subtracting decimals. Where might you use this concept? When will we use this in
real life?

Shopping

Measuring
Great! So lets go over addition and subtraction first.
SLIDE ONE: (3min)

What is addition?
-The total number of object or things being counted generate a
class definition

GO through problem as a class have a volunteer write the correct answer

on board
SLIDE TWO: (3min)

What is subtraction?

-Taking away a part of the whole, taking some away from an amount.
Generate a class definition

GO through problem as a class have a volunteer write the correct answer

on the board.
SLIDE THREE: (3 min)

What is a decimal?
A number that has parts that dont equal the whole number 1.
Generate a class definition

How do we say a decimal?

-Label boxes on the screen
-Have no more than 3 volunteers go up to the board to drag numbers into
boxes
- As a class we will pronounce each number
SLIDE FOUR: (2 min)

When Adding and subtracting decimals there are four major steps (pull
down each box and talk about each step wait for kids to fill in the blank
SLIDE FIVE (5 min)

DO a minimum of two problems together by pulling down numbers to

form a problem
-have kids come up to the board to solve after they have solved
them on their own paper
SLIDE SIX (5-6mins For them to work on next four problems)

Have a volunteer come up to the board and pop balloons to see answer
(any question they get wrong will get solved as a class.
IF THERE IS TIME/ IF THE CHILD IS ADHEAD OF CLASS:
SLIDE SEVEN: THE WORD PROBLEM
Martin had $10.50. He went shopping and bought a shirt that was $3.80. Then he
went to the food court and ate lunch that cost him $5.00. Then when he went
home his mom gave him $4.34. How much money does Martin have?
Talk through it as a class
Give them time to come up with their solution
Go through it as a class

Accommodations

Struggle with the provided problems then they will be done as a class
If they are understanding the concept they can work on the word problem, or
create their own problem on the back of the pages

Self Reflection
I felt that this lesson plan will successfully help me in having the children
understand the concept of adding and subtracting decimals. The estimation of
time was off because the total amount of time it took to get through everything
was around 41 minutes. Also, I feel that my conclusion could use improvement.
