Personal Essay
I am applying to Brooklyn College and Lehman College to study for the Masters degree program in
Global Business and Finance to better prepare for my career goal, which is to be an international
marketing professional in beauty industry. Upon deepening my understanding of globalization on
business, I would ultimately like to contribute to the development of Japanese cosmetic industry in the
global market.
As I embark on the field of global business, I cannot help noticing that the Japanese cosmetic
companies need more progress toward globalization. The annual sales of beauty and personal care
products in Japan have continued to grow. In 2013, it reached approximately 21 billion dollars and it is
the second largest market for cosmetics in the world. Also, beauty product is one of only two retail
categories that show growth in the troubled Japanese economy. However, few Japanese cosmetic
company has been successfully developed international brand, compare to other industries such as
automotive and electronics. This indicates that although the people in Japan have strong awareness of
cosmetics and manufacture tons of domestic products, the industrys approach toward global market is
not efficient. Therefore, I believe that Japanese cosmetic industry still holds substantial potentialities to
grow in the international arena of business.
