Section 2 - Sensors

Definition:
A sensor is a device that detects or measures a physical property and records, indicates, or otherwise responds to it,
A sensor measures the amount of something

KEY POINT: Sensors are used to provide input in measurement applications

Task 1
Each of the pictures below shows a different type of sensor. Work out what type of sensor each one is and what system its part of.

1.
2.
3.
4.
5.

A motion Sensor, being used in an automatic door System

A security Sensor, being used in a security System
A infer red Sensor, being used in a light System
A air con Sensor, being used in a air conditioner System
A optical Sensor, being used in a finger print recognition system

Task 2

Time
Analogue

Time

Digital

Analogue data is a transmission method of conveying voice, data, image, signal or video information using a
continuous signal which varies in amplitude, phase, or some other property in proportion to that of a variable.
Analogue data changes in smooth data and is simply a measurement of the amount of something physical.
Digital data are discrete, discontinuous representations of information or works, as contrasted with continuous or
analogue signals which behave in a continuous manner, or represent information using a continuous function. Its
simply 0s and 1sand only understand physical data.

Therefore an ADC is needed because sensors produce analogue data were as computers only understand digital
data.

Task 3

A heating system uses a sensor to decide when the radiators should be turned on and off.
The controls are set to maintain a room temperature of 22 Degrees C
When the system turns on, the water must flow round and be constantly warmed.

1. What Sensor(s) would be needed in this system? Explain their use

Temperature so you the constant temperature of the room

2. What output devices would be needed in this system? Explain their use
Heater so you can maintain the heat around the room and water,
Pump because without it you wont be able to make water flow

3. Fill in the PROCESSES (rules) below that this system would need to follow
If the temperature is greater than 22 degrees the turn the heater and pump off

Example: If the speed is greater than 70 then turn the motor OFF.

Rule 1: If the temperature is greater than 22 degrees then turn the pump and heater off
Rule 2: If the

is

than

then turn
