1. Cholesterol, a waxy substance produced by the liver and found in certain foods, is needed to
make vitamin D, some hormones, cell repair, and bile production. Total cholesterol is composed
majorly of HDL, LDL, and VLDL.
2. Beneficial Effect: Tissue repair; maintains structural integrity of cell membrane; precursor
to hormone synthesis; precursor to vitamin D
Damaging Effect: Myocardial infarction, stroke, myocardial ischemia, arteriosclerosis
3.
4. Chylomicrons transport exogenous fats and cholesterol via lymph system to large body veins.
VLDL, IDL, and LDL transport endogenous fats and cholesterol from liver to tissues. HDL
transports endogenous cholesterol from tissues to liver.
5. It catalyzes the hydrolysis of sterol esters into their components sterols and fatty acids.
6. Arteriosclerosis- It is the hardening and thickening of the walls of the arteries
Myocardial infarction- It is also known as heart attack; it is the irreversible necrosis of heart
muscle secondary to prolonged ischemia
Ischemia- It occurs when blood flow to your heart is decreased by a partial or complete blockage
of your hearts arteries
