Text Analysis

The poem, Did I Miss Anything? is about a student who has missed a big chunk of
school and is asking their teacher if they missed anything. The teacher in this poem is
going back and forth between the student missing a whole bunch and nothing at all.
When the teacher is sarcastically telling the student that they didnt miss anything, it
makes me think of how the school views us as being lazy, uncaring and stupid. This
teacher seems to always nag and sarcastically put down the student by saying things
like, We twiddled our thumbs waiting for you to get here. According to the rest of the
school we don't do our work, we don't come to class and we arent considerate about
the students around us. We think the world revolves around us. This poem collectively
holds all those views in a witty and eye opening poem.
Homework
All this talk, talk, talk
Teachers are assigning me homework
All I want, is to rock, rock, and rock
This homework is a stumbling block

They all say it is the only way
To sharpen my brain
What a drain!
Keep me thoughtful and creative
Encourage me to be innovative
Keep me occupied with some positive motive

Yeah right
I can see some light
The idea is bright

All this talk, talk, talk
I am just doing my homework
As I listen to the clock
Singing out tick, tock, tick, tock
Do not mock, just do your homework

~This poem Homework relates to the poem Did I miss anything in a way that says
when you miss school, you have missed a lot of work. with the spare time we get after
school were too wrapped up in our own enjoyment to focus on our studies even though
we are so behind. This is said in the poem through sarcasm in the poem as well.

Missing class

Every year, thousands of seriously sick kids are missing school for long periods. Their siblings
may also be feeling disconnected. Missing school is not just a physical thing, its emotional and
psychological too. Kids who miss school miss the everyday learning and social experiences that
help them feel better now and build positive futures. Being sick doesnt stop kids from needing
to do their most important work, like learning, interacting and having fun with other kids.

~This blog post emphasizes that when a child is missing school it affects vital parts of
their lives. This is also being driven home in the poem, Did I Miss Anything, for
example when the teacher sarcastically states that nothing happens while a student is
missing.

~When you connect this photo with the poem Did i miss anything you can see that the student is
overwhelmed by the workload given. Trying to catch up can be quite a bit of work, and in the photo it
looks like the student is under a lot of stress due to them not being present.

Report: 10 percent of students miss too much school

By:
Alison DeNisco
District Administration, November 2013
An estimated one in 10 students in the United States are chronically absent from school,
increasing the chances they will fall behind or drop out.
Students who miss 18 or more days of school are considered chronically absent, regardless of
whether the absences are excused, unexcused, or for disciplinary reasons, says a new policy
brief from Attendance Works, a national and state initiative founded in 2010 that is aimed at
addressing chronic absence to improve student success.
These numbers had never been investigated in depth until a 2012 study from Johns Hopkins
University examined data from the six states that monitor chronic absence rates. Researchers
estimate between 5 million and 7.5 million students nationwide are missing too much
school.Losing that instructional time correlates with poor academic achievement at all ages, the
brief states. In the early grades, students who are not in class miss crucial language instruction,
and are less likely to reach reading proficiency by grade 3. The likelihood of dropping out
increases sharply if students are chronically absent in middle and high school.

~This article presents the issue of students falling behind in school due to the fact that
they arent regularly present. The poem Did I miss anything emphasizes that you
simply have to be present and put forth the work, if you don't you will reap the
consequences and live a long life full of struggle.

~This picture exemplifies the work load and how time consuming school is. I n order for you to stay on
top you have to come to school which is emphasized in the poem, Did I Miss Anything ?
