*What Changed?
*The invention of photography in the 1830s
encouraged artists to paint with an even
greater degree of realism at first but as the
19
th
century wore on some artists began to
question the need for art to refer to the
outside world at all. This eventually led to the
development of Abstract Art.
*Q. What was happening in the developing world
at this time?

*Modern art
movements
*As artists began to experiment with new styles
and techniques they gathered in groups to talk
about their ideas. Artists with similar aims
sometimes formed a movement. This helped
develop confidence through solidarity and also
gave the movement more authority as groups
of artists tended to be taken more seriously.

* Most people take seeing pretty much for granted; after all, you use your
eyes all the time, dont you?
* But when was the last time you really observed something?
* The point about observation is that it should make you focus in on the
subject you are drawing so that you begin to understand how it is made,
and not just what its outside surface is like.
* Time yourself while you are drawing.
* You should spend almost the same amount of time looking as actually
drawing.
* Most students will glance up at the objects they are drawing and spend
most of the time with their eyes on the paper.
* don't fall into this habit! They are actually drawing from memory, which is
much more difficult and is not necessary when what they are drawing is
right in front of them!
