Introduction

An orthotic technician provides care for patients with disabling conditions of the limbs and spine by fabricating devices
known as orthoses (braces). Under the guidance of a certified orthotic practitioner, the technician fabricates orthoses
according to a physician prescription, as well as patient casts and measurements to provide optimal fit, function, and
workmanship. A prosthetic technician provides care for patients with partial or total absence of a limb by fabricating
prostheses (artificial limbs). Under the guidance of a certified prosthetic practitioner, the technician fabricates prostheses
according to a physician prescription, as well as patient casts and measurements to provide optimal fit, function, cosmesis,
and workmanship.

Program Overview
The orthotic and prosthetic technician programs prepare individuals for entry into the field of orthotics and/or prosthetics at
the technician level. Didactic and laboratory coursework is combined with individualized instruction in the areas of lower
limb, upper limb, and spine. Instructional content areas include anatomy, terminology, measurement forms, fabrication
process, system alignment, suspension techniques, components, materials, repair, and maintenance procedures. Clinical
experience enables the student to practice fabrication skills in an orthotic/prosthetic facility.
