This document discusses the well-posedness of first order ordinary differential equations when the right-hand side is a discontinuous function. It first reviews the classical results for smooth data and introduces the notion of a Filippov solution for discontinuous functions. It then specifies what types of discontinuities still imply well-posedness of the Cauchy problem and assumes the discontinuities are related to the solution of a scalar conservation law. The document develops a new proof of well-posedness for Filippov solutions under these assumptions.

A. CORONEL A AND F. HUANCAS B Abstract. In this work we study the existence, uniqueness and continuous dependence of the solution with respect to the initial data of a rst order ordinary dierential equation by applying the conservation laws theory. We start by a critical review of the clas- sical results of ODE theory in the case of smooth data. Then we introduce the notion of solution in the sense of Filippov, when the right hand side is a discontinuous function. We precise the type of discontinuities which implies the well-posedness of the Cauchy problem. We assume that the admissible discontinuities are related with the solution of a scalar conservation law and we develop a new proof of the well-posedness of Filippov solutions. References [1] A.
