1. What was the area of focus today during the lesson? What activities related to the area of focus did the teacher include in the lesson today? The class was only there for 20 minutes today because there was an orchestra concert for the middle school. During the time that the students were in the classroom they worked on their Read180 things on the computer. There were major problems with the technology today, so some of the kids had to independently read while they were waiting for the concert.
2. What went well with the instruction? What did students learn? One of the children that I was watching on the computer was working on their spelling. They got their personal highest score! Mrs. Robinson really celebrated that and let the students know that their classmate really met a milestone! There wasnt any whole class instruction today; except for her saying, everyone log onto read180. Some of the students were in the writing zone and they were working on forming full sentences about text that they were reading.
3. Explain a growth moment for yourself where you realized, learned, or confirmed something from today dealing with student achievement in the area of reading. (phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, before/during/after reading Today was a stressful day for the teacher because the technology wasnt working. She took action and assigned some kiddos to read independently. The kids that she assigned to independent reading were children who were behind on their person reading scores. She suggested that we allow the kids to read to us in the future to help them not rush through the material, and to really focus on the comprehension. 4. Describe a moment when a student grasped an idea/concept-that got it! kind of moment. How was the teacher able to facilitate this experience? Explain the situation. There was one student who was recording their reading, working on fluency. They student recorded and then listened to his recording. Then without me or anyone having to say anything the student said that he thought that he could do better and rerecorded. He recognized that his reading was choppy and he had the personal desire to do better. To help encourage him I said I like how you noticed that you can Adapted from Developmental Reading Reflection document created by Sarah Mwangi, 06/13
do better, because I know you can do better too, lets try that again. The student rerecorded and did so much better. I was so impressed that he wanted to do that on his own.
