The 8 Aboriginal Ways Of Learning is a pedagogy framework.
This model was
developed through a research project aimed to engage with Aboriginal learning processes. It also seeks to engage educators in a dialogue at the common ground between Indigenous and mainstream pedagogies (Yunkaporta, 2010).
8 Ways of learning lesson plan: Intertidal coastline Science / Level 8 / Science Understanding / Biological sciences (Focus on Wilsons Promontory) Tell a story Get class to sit in a circle and tell them a story of an intertidal coastline at Wilson Promontory, with people, animals, birds and fish character references. Making note of significant biotic and abiotic features that paint a picture of the surrounding. Make a plan Draw a map of where it is located and get students to close their eyes and visualise it and what is taking place there right now. Think and do Have some beach materials at the class for students to touch, smell, see, feel etc and stimulate their sensors. E.g. Sea weeds, sand, rocks, melaleuca leaves, yellow box eucalyptus leaves etc Draw it Get students to draw an artefact or landscape they visualised and label features it if appropriate. Take it outside Change the classes environment. Go outside and sit down. Tell them to imagine surviving solely on the intertidal coastline. Ask questions of the students like - how do we learn from the land? How do we learn from nature? Try a new way We have a class discussion and brainstorm to piece together ideas and different thought processes on surviving using an intertidal coastline. Watch first, then do Go back inside classroom and watch a video outlining intertidal coastlines and then answer questions.
