When interviewed, Dr. Bethesda told us of the practical uses of stem cells. Bethesda -Human stem cells
could also be used to test new drugs. Cancer cell lines, for example, are used to screen potential anti-
tumor drugs. So instead of using drugs on humans right away, they can be tested on the stem cells first
to avoid hurting a person. Dr. Bethesda also told us that stem cells could be used to replace damaged tis-
sue. Dr. Bethesda -Stem cells, directed to differentiate into specific cell types, offer the possibility of a
renewable source of replacement cells and tissues to treat diseases. Using stem cells would help a con-
siderable amount because the amounts of people needing an organ or tissue outweigh the amount of peo-
ple donating. After the interview I felt pretty convinced the stem cells could give us a brighter future.
An argument that has been presented was regarded to stem cell funds. The government has been fighting
about providing federal funds to stem cell research. There are more than 50% of people who do support the
research of stem cells. Mostly everyone that supports stem cell research, wants the government to provide
more federal funds so scientist can continue investigation. If investiga-
tion continues, more diseases can be treated. Though, those who oppose
think its a wait of money and
think the money used can be
used for better interesting
things.

many different types of stem cells. For example, one type of stem cell is
called embryonic stem cell. Embryonic stem cells are cells that can be-
come all cell types of the body by the reason that they are pluripotent.
Stem cells can be used by holding great promise for biomedical science
and they have the ability in treating debilitating diseases. The reasons
why scientist want to study stem cells are because they want to discover
medicine for untreated diseases and to uncover fundamental processes
that lead to diseases.

So far, more than 50% support stem cell research, thought
the other half oppose. The ones who support say studying
stem cells would help treat untreated diseases. Though, the
ones who oppose think its a waist of money by just investi-
gating and researching new medicines. The ones who op-
pose think that the money that is being wasted in investiga-
tion should be used for other important use. Also, they said
that the since the scientist use feudal funds for investigation,
they say that using feudal money is illegal. One fact that they dont know is that
scientist use private funds without breaking any laws. That way they can continue
their observation.
