ETHNICITY
Ethnicity
The fact or state of
belonging to a social
group that has a
common national or
cultural tradition.

Five Factors of Ethnicity
1. Nationality

Ethnicity vs. Race
Ethnicity
Shared cultural traits
and a shared group history.

Some ethnic groups also
share linguistic or
religious traits.

Others share a common
group history, but not a
common language or
religion.
Race
Sometimes considered a
social construct.

Shared biological or
genetic traits, whether
actual or asserted.

Races are assumed to be
distinguished by skin
color, facial type, etc.
Ethnicity & Belonging
Ethnic Groups have a Shared Genealogy
Actual (born into it) or Presumed (chose to be a
part of it)

If someone believes they are part of a certain
ethnicity, or they want to be a part of that ethnic
group, then they can be considered part of it.

The History of Ethnicity
The word ethnic came about during the
Second World War.
o Polite term that referred to Jews, Italians, Irish,
and others who were considered to be inferior to
those who were of dominant British descent.

The term first appeared in dictionaries in
1972.
Discussing Stereotypes
Discuss with your groups what stereotypes
you have heard or saw about Jews, Italians,
and Hispanics.
Come up with 2 or more stereotypes and
write them on the board for your group.
How might these stereotypes affect our
students?
Stereotypes in Schools
In schools, negative stereotypes often
predetermine performance.

Students who belong to minority ethnic groups
worry that they will prove those stereotypes,
and therefore it hinders their test
performance, motivation, and learning.

Hispanics and Black children have been found to
have critically low reading and math proficiency.
