Statement of Future Plans
I am part of the graduating class of 2015, and will soon e out of high school to egin
the ne!t phase of m" life on m" own. Throughout m" "ears oth outside of and inside of
class, I ha#e learned that I am a it a#erse to conforming to normalit". I prefer fantas" to
realit". I am drawn towards e!pression and artistic de#iation. In particular, I am a ig
ad#ocate of #ideo games as an emerging art form, and wish to pursue game design as a
possile career choice. To this end, I intend to enroll at $!pression %ollege of %alifornia,
and ta&e the steps necessar" to achie#e this goal.
'" academic life is not directl" proportionate to m" goals. In a wa", I feel that I ha#e
een underprepared for post(high school life, as not enough focus was put on de#eloping
the s&ills needed to pursue m" desired interest. )hat little I &now of the gaming industr"
comes from oser#ation and research done on m" free time. I recogni*e that a great deal
of technical &nowledge is needed to e!cel in this field. +n that matter, I am e,ual parts
afraid and determined. I ha#e alwa"s een one to sh" awa" from particularl" complicated
processes, usuall" math(oriented. It is #er" li&el" that math will e a ig part of
programming, and so is a hurdle that I must cross. In that respect, I ha#e some asic
&nowledge gathered from math classes ta&en at school, although I-m sure that I will need
to &now a lot more. If its for the sa&e of reaching m" goal, then I am willing to ma&e that
commitment.
+ne wa" in which I am prepared for this particular field of interest is the le#el of m"
creati#it". .lthough I often suffer from long dr" spells of writer-s loc&, sudden moments
of inspiration ha#e culminated in the creation of products which I feel are worth" of
eing pulished. I am a freelance writer who en/o"s fiction to a great degree, and often
come up with stories on a whim, purel" for the en/o"ment of it. '" ideas are not
designed to turn a profit. The" are to entertain m"self, and possil" others. I lo#e sharing
m" stories with others. I en/o" the concept of eing ale to ta&e rea&s from this world to
e!plore other worlds created in m" mind. I e,uall" en/o" peering into the creati#e minds
of others. This mindset is one of the things that enhances m" en/o"ment of games, and
m" desire to emulate what I e!perience. I want to e ale to e part of the emerging art
form that is the #ideo game narrati#e, to reach people-s emotions through art. If I can
create interacti#e products that run on m" imagination, I will consider it the crowning
achie#ement of m" life. I want to ma&e mo#ing, interacti#e stories for people to
e!perience and share with others.
0uilding on this idea, not onl" do I want to materiali*e m" own #isions, ut I also
wish to see the same come true for possile partners. .lmost in#arial", loc&uster
games are the wor& of large teams of designers, who all contriute something to the
o#erall product. In the same wa" that I #alue and en/o" m" own creati#it", I also want to
e!plore the imaginations of others. I want the opportunit" to wor& with future successful
designers, and e part of the collaorati#e process that results in finished products. I want
to find teammates that I am comfortale with and can wor& together with to achie#e
mutual amitions. )hen societ" reali*es that games are an art form that should e gi#en
the same le#el of respect and appreciation as film and literature, I want to e among those
credited with reali*ing this earlier than e#er"one else. I want to e part of a new stage of
histor". This passion, if an"thing, is what will carr" me through the ne!t phase of m" life,
and hopefull", ring me to the reali*ation of m" dreams.
