Lesson Title: Day and Night

Lesson Overview
Write a brief, yet concise, description of what occurs in this lesson (50 words).
What will students learn during the lesson?
In this lesson, the students will learn.. The sun comes out during the day and the moon comes out during the night.
The students will learn that the sky is blue during the day and the sky at night is dark. Students will observe the
difference between night and day.

- Creativity and innovation
- Students demonstrate creative thinking, construct knowledge, and develop innovate
products and processes using technology.
- D. Identify trends and forecast possibilities.
Instructional
Objectives
Clear, Specific, and Measurable NOT ACTIVITIES. Student-friendly. The objective for
this lesson [learning outcome] should identify the A, B, C & D.
Given the pictures of day and night, the learners will learn that day and night have different
objects that can be seen by using the smartboard to place the correct objects in the day scene
and the night scene.

Prior Knowledge
What prior knowledge will the students have to have to be able to do this lesson? You
might look at the year before Common Core/State Standards to see what they were
suppose to learn before doing the state standard you chose.
Students will need to know how to work a smart board and be able to
move clipart to the day and night backdrop on the screen. The students
need to have basic concepts of the differences between day and night.

Dr. Susan Sutton, 2014

Need or Purpose
Why do students need to learn this lesson?
Helping students learn that there are different objects that can be
seen during the day and night. Students need to learn that day and
night times are different.

Teacher Preparation
Explain what the teacher has to do to get ready for the lesson including activities such as
gather materials, bookmark websites, create research guides, schedule labs, gather
parent permission for fieldtrips, etc
The teacher needs to create one document for a day scene and one document for a night scene.
The teacher needs to have clipart pictures to choose from to put on the day and night scene.

Active
Participation
Explain what the students do in this lesson that puts them in an active learning situation.
The students will come up to the smart board and place a clipart picture on either the day or
night scene.

Formative
Assessment
The criteria should directly align with the instructional objectives and standards. How will
you monitor student progress? Also describe your plan for providing feedback to your
students during the lesson?
- During the beginning of the lesson, students will make a list of what they see during the
day and during the night.
- During the I do portion of the lesson, the students will explain why they are placing the
clipart picture on that scene. The teacher will ask the students if the objects can be seen
at both day and night.

Materials
List all materials and include how each will be used during the lesson. Must align with the
Instructional Objective
Smart board

Instructional Procedures
Essential Question
An Essential Question encourages students to put forth more effort when faced with
complex, open-ended, challenging, meaningful and authentic questions.
Why is understanding the difference between day and night important?
What is a large difference between day and night?
Lesson set
Motivator/Hook - How will you open the lesson to motivate the students? How will you
relate this lesson to previous learning & to real life experiences, to explain the
importance of the learning to the students? (student involvement required)
Show the scenes of day and night. Ask the students what happens during the day? What
happens during the night?
Dr. Susan Sutton, 2014

Techniques &
Activities
List the instructional procedures step-by-step, in sequential order as they occur in the
lesson. What will you do? What will the students do? How will you keep learners
engaged? Within the procedures a variety of classroom teaching strategies (methods)
are identified. Student centered activities are included as well as guided practice of the
learning is included.
- Explain to the students that day and night are different.
- We will discuss that the sun comes out during the day and the moon and stars come out
during the night.
- The students will give examples on what they see during the day (clouds, birds, sun.
etc.)
- The students will give examples on what they see during the night (moon, stars, lights,
etc.)
- Then students will come up to the smart board and place clipart pictures on the scene.
- The students will be asked why they believe an object is visible during the day and night.

Extension
How will I provide modified instructions for gifted students? I call this Gear-up.
Extensions are additional activities to expand the learning on the lesson. If students
finish early what will the supplemental activity be? - I will have them do.
While the other students are coming up to the board, the class will be
watching and listening to their peers.

Remediation
How will I provide modified instructions for below average? I call this - gear-down.
Remediation activities include methods to re-teach the learning for students who need
more instruction. If a student falls behind I will ..

Their peers will help the students find the correct clipart picture to place
on that scene. There will also be a printed list if the clipart and a list of
objects found during the day and night.

Adaptions
Modifications
How will I provide modified instruction for special education? How will you adapt the
learning for learners with special needs? Choose one disability and tell me how you
would adapt this lesson for that disability.
A student with ADD will seat in a movable chair beside the teacher at the board and hand the students the
pen so they can move the clipart to the scene.

CLOSURE
Reflection / Wrap-Up. How will you close the lesson, summarize the lesson content,
Dr. Susan Sutton, 2014

relate the lesson to future lessons & tie it to previous lessons? (student-involvement
required). How will I review subject-matter and purpose with students?
The lesson will be closed by the students drawing a day and night scene with activities that are
done during those times. The students will also draw animals that can be seen during those
scenes. The students will work with their table group to draw the scenes on large pieces of
paper. The students will be able to sit on the floor to color their scenes.

Summative
Assessment

Describe the assessment process that you will use to measure whether the students
achieved the instructional objectives. How will you assess the student
performance/mastery of skill? What are the criteria for achievement, and performance
level? How will you assess that students have learned? How will you monitor student
progress? The criteria should directly align to the instructional objectives and standards.
Also describe your plan for providing feedback to your students.
The students will take the plates home and finish their plates. I will be looking to make sure the
day and night objects are in the correct places according to the scene. I will be looking for 90%
accuracy.
