Parwan Valley (White Elephant) field trip

Unit 2, Year 11 Biology Sac

SAC relates to Outcome 1: On completion of this unit the student should be able to explain and analyse the relationship between environmental
factors, and adaptations and distribution of living things.
Increasing soil salinity in Australia is a serious environmental issue. It creates problems with population dynamics and limits the carrying capacity of
ecosystems affecting the distribution and abundance of organisms. All over the country, salt is rising out of the ground and destroying our natural
environs, farms, homes and towns. Components of ecosystems - both biotic and abiotic factors affect the communities of living organisms, ecological
groupings and ecological niches. To understand why we have this problem, we need to go way back in Australia's history and see how previous poor
land use has brought about this issue.
You have been employed by the Department of Environment and Primary Industries (DEPI) to write a report on the on going revegetation at the
White Elephant Reserve and how effective it has been at managing soil erosion, salinity issues and ultimately the population dynamics of its
flora and fauna.
The following criteria for this assignment will form the basis for how successful your report will be. In order to ensure you achieve the best report
you are capable of, please use the following criteria to shape the way you present your report!
Present collected fieldwork data report as an oral presentation using a multimedia technique (ICT) 7 minutes in duration.
ALL WORK MUST BE YOUR OWN! Please do not copy and paste, as this doesnt show me what YOU can do
Pictures, diagrams and data RELATED TO THE QUESTIONS have been used to aid the purpose of the report
Reference list: Texts, Journals and Include the URL (website address) for all the websites you look at for this report
These Questions will form the basis of the report:
Using examples from the field trip to Parwan Valley and the White Elephant Reserve, provide information on the following points:
Enviromental factors of a food web found at White Elephant Reserve : biotic and abiotic
factors; availability of resources.
List adaptations the vegetation possesses to survive on salinity stricken Rabbit Warren
Hill.
The relationship between vegetation and water movement.
Detail a specific technique used to monitor environmental change and species distribution
The impact of land degradation issues in the Parwan Valley on the surrounding
environment.
Approaches to management of vegetation and soils in relation to Population dynamics:
carrying capacity of ecosystems; factors affecting distribution and abundance of
organisms including
