Assignment 3: Case Study Analysis
Many college students are struggling to deal with their stress and pressure in and
outside of the school. In the case of a girl called Katya, she has anxiety on her coming
exam. Her average grade is 3.0 at her first year. At almost the end of the semester,
she had too much pressure on herself about chemistry exam. One of the main reasons
that she strongly got anxiety for the exam is that she believes that her efforts dont help
her better grade at all regardless of her diligent studying. The other reason is that she
needs to get good grade to keep her scholarship. Because of the pressure, she finally
got a panic attack two days before the exam. How could she fix this situation? How
could she build up her self-efficacy?
Whatever the situation is, the key to overcome is to accept yourself and manage a
plan. In my personal experience, I tend to underestimate myself in college. When I
take art class, I usually feel unconfident on my skill and artwork in spite of good grades
and good comments on my work. The negative feelings come from the thoughts, which
are like I cannot do it or I cannot be better. This thoughts ruin my positive attitude
about the project and cause extreme stress. To overcome the stress and become
optimism, I tried to know how I exactly feel and face what the situation is going on. First,
what I do is to write down any thoughts that I come up with on the notebook. It helps
my mind and the situation clear. The second thing that I do is to make a plan how to
make it better little by little. After making a plan including a short term and long term
goal, I feel much better and more comfortable about myself. I think we need a feeling
that we have accomplished something step by step even if it is a small accomplishment.
The last thing that I do to release my stress is to have relax and to share the stress with
my friends. Peer pressure can really help me to think positively because I feel relieved
after I know the problems that I face is not only happening to me. We need to know that
anxiety doesnt help our school performance but only positive feelings and attitude can
help it.
Improving self-efficacy is a key to deal with stress. There are several ways to
improve her self-efficacy. According to CHANGXIU, S., & XIAOJUN, Z. (2014) on THE
INFLUENCE OF COLLEGE STUDENTS' COPING STYLES ON PERCEIVED SELF-
EFFICACY IN MANAGING INFERIORITY", to solve their problem, students need to
perceive their self-efficacy by managing their inferiority. They point out that negative
coping style can cause students negative emotion, so managing appropriate and
effective coping style is a key to succeed as college students. The result of the
examination shows effective self-efficacy can reduce stress. This journal concludes that
accepting their inferiority is a significant step to release the stress, but what else can be
possible to make students positive at the school? Also, the website ANXIETY AND
DEPRESSION ASSOSIATION OF AMERICE shows that there are several ways to
treat their anxiety. It shows that relaxation techniques can help people to release their
stress and anxiety under pressure. The other solution is cognitive-behavioral therapy,
which helps to identify, understand, and change thinking and behavior patterns. Also,
medication treatment can help to release her anxiety. However, the important things to
consider the medication are how the medication will help the stressful situation and
what side effect might occur.
Overall, even though many students, including Katya, have anxiety disorder, there
are several ways to treat their problem. One of the options that Katya can do is to seek
professional help like therapy because peer pressure helps her to think about her
situation clearly and makes her feel more comfortable. To form realistic expectations
before beginning each semester, what she can prepare for is making a plan and
focusing on time management. Also, from a health perspective, finding the ways to
have relax like doing yoga or some activities, and talking to her friends are important to
decrease anxiety and learn optimism in college. Not everyone is perfect, so we should
accept ourselves and even our inferiority for healthy life.
