Student Survey

Mayanne Kim
ITE 314
Fall 2013-2014
Ewa Elementary School Kindergarten classroom
There are 23 students, including 3 ELL students.
12 students are boys and 11 students are girls.
No diverse learners
There is a wide range of writing levels in the classroom. Many of
them are in the middle still learning how to form commonly used
words in their writing.
MT created her own writing curriculum and believes in
encouraging students to try writing (even if they dont fully know
how) and see themselves as authors. She has them make mistakes
and says it is okay to do so because they are still learning.
20 students were present (2 absent, 1 survey void)

Demographics
Two students were absent
Students would sometimes color in more than one
face as their answer. I needed to catch this and have
them fix it before we moved on.
I didnt catch one students survey and I had to void
the survey.
Survey Problems
I created a worksheet with two sides:
One side mirrored a worksheet that students use for
Writers Workshop.
The second side was a survey with questions about
writing and they colored in a face that reflected their
answer.
I prompted students to draw what they like to write
about on the first side, and I explained that I will be
calling small groups to answer the second side as a
group.
I read the question to them and re-explained what
each face meant. The students would then color in
their answer. I continued calling small groups until I
met with everyone.

Survey Sample
Attitude: What are students
attitudes about writing?
The two questions I asked
about their writing were:
Do you like to write?
Do you write at home?
Analysis: Most students like
to write with proper
encouragement from the
teacher. More than half
write at home. They are still
learning how to write, so as
they get older they may
write more at home.

Analysis
I asked students to draw pictures of what they like to
write about, and then try to write about their picture. I
went around to ask what they drew and wrote a note
down.
The top three topics students liked to write about were
their family members, weather, and flowers.
Other interests were planes, bugs, angels, animals, and
parks.

Interest: What do students like to
write about?
Examples
Storm Mom I love Cat
Learning Style: What do students perceive are
effective with helping them learn how to write?
The questions I asked
were:
1) Do you like to draw
before you write?
2) Do you like to share
your writing after?
3) Do you like listening to
other kids share their
writing?

16 students expressed they like to draw before writing, 2 said
sometimes, and 2 said no. I feel that many students are tactile
learners. This introduces brainstorming in the writing process. I
feel the students that didnt answer yes are either more auditory
or needs more confidence in their drawing skills.
17 students expressed they like to share their writing after, 2 said
sometimes, and 1 said no.
19 students expressed they like listening to other kids share their
writing, and 1 said sometimes.
Most of the students are very outgoing and are quick to raise
their hands to share in front of the class. Most students are
visual learners and learn by doing and watching the teacher and
other students model.

Analysis of Students Learning Style
Work Habits: What do students perceive as their
ability to complete writing assignments?
The question I asked was:
Do you think writing is easy?
Analysis:
25% (5/20) of students
feel writing is
sometimes/not easy. They
may lack the time, tools,
confidence needed to
finish writing
assignments in the time
allowed.

easy?
Yes

No
Majority of students have a positive view on writing. With only
one student expressing liking writing only sometimes.
More than half of the students expressed that they write at
home.
Students have the opportunity to practice writing during
Readers and Writers Workshops. In the past they have been
prompted to draw/write about characters and the setting
from the book.
During Writers Workshop, they have the option to work on a
new piece or to continue working on a previous piece. This
gives them freedom as an author and be self directed learners.
Summary of Students Attitude
The top three topics students liked to write about
were their family members, weather, and flowers.
Other interests were planes, bugs, angels, animals,
and parks.
I can understand why these topics were top three
because they have learned about the weather, plants,
and drawing people in the past.

Summary of Students Interests
Summary of Students Learning Style
To the question Do you think writing is easy? 15 students
answered yes, 3 students answered sometimes, and 2
students answered no.
For those students who didnt answer yes, maybe they
need more prompts so they can gain ideas on what they
can write about. I also feel they need more time and
practice writing. Many are able to recognize letters, but
need more help sounding out the words they need. I find
many students put their current piece in the completed
section of their folder. They may need more
encouragement to continue the work they didnt finish yet.

Summary of Students Work Habits
For the rest of the semester I plan to encourage
students to revisit their past work to add words or
detail in their pictures. Im going to recognize those
who take that stride and continue to help others work
on adding detail and producing quality work.
I want to help students feel more confident about
drawing their thoughts out. I will try to show them
simple shapes they can use to portray animals, people,
etc. and continue to remind them that it is important to
try their best in drawing and writing.
Implementation Plan
I plan on integrating a Language Arts lesson with the
Performing Arts.
I am modifying a lesson called, Imagination Walk where I
will read different scenarios that provoke a different
emotion. Students will perform that emotion when I ask
them to show me their walk (Happy walk, scared walk).
They will learn to communicate and recognize these
different emotions in writing and life. This is a good
exercise for those students who like to be in front of the
classroom. This will help other students as well because
they wont be by themselves, but with other students
performing at the same time.
Implementation Plan
Pre-Lesson
I will create a draft of my lesson plan and show it to my
mentor. She encourages me to try out my different
ideas in her classroom. I will ask for her suggestions and
the type of language I should use to communicate
directions to the students.
Post
I will review and reflect my mentors notes on my lesson.
I will also reflect on my own performance to improve my
future lessons.
