CIV 215 Structures 1

(2 hours lectures; 2 hours tutorials per week)



WEEK 1: Types of forces, structural forms, joints and supports, equations of
equilibrium, conditions for statistical determinacy.

WEEK 2: Plane figures; solution of forces by the method of sections.

WEEK 3: Plane frames, solution of forces by the method of tension coefficients.

WEEK 4: Plane frames; solution of forces by inspection and stress diagrams. Space
Frames.

WEEK 5: Types of beams; loads, supports and reactions. Concepts of bending
moment and shearing force. Bending moment and shear force diagrams.
Relation between intensity of loading, shear force and bending moment.

WEEK 6: Mathematical and graphical solutions of Bending moment and Shear force
diagrams for simply supported, cantilever and overhanging beams for
concentrated and distributed loadings.

WEEK 7: Further examples of computation of Bending moment and Shear force
diagrams for simply supported, cantilever and overhanging beams for
various load cases.

WEEK 8: MID-SEMESTEREXAMS

WEEK9: Deflection of beams by the Double Integration method.

WEEK 10: Deflection of beams by the Macaulays method.

WEEK 11: Deflection of beams by the area-moment theorems.

WEEK 12: Engineers Theory of Bending, derivation of bending equation;

WEEK 13: Bending and Shear stress distributions; rectangular, I and T-sections.

WEEK 14: Theory of Suspension Cables and Bridges; Maximum pull and reactions;
graphical method. Mathematical methods of determination; cable support
at different levels; effect of temperature stresses.

WEEK 15: FINAL EXAM
Laboratory Practicals.

ASSESSMENT: Course work 40% Exams 60%
