Name of Assessment: Rhythm Reading Test

Formal Summative

Formal Summative:
1. The teacher will score the assessment by using the rubric to mark whether the assessment
was completed satisfactorily.
2. The data is how many correct rhythms and/or syllables the student answered. The ability to
speak in rhythms that are written is what is scored for each student.
3. The teacher will use the data to see the progress of each student in learning how to read
rhythms. When students are not progressing the teacher may review the material in class if
needed.
a. Proficiency is determined differently between the written and the oral test:
i. Written test requires 75% and above of the notes written correctly with
each note being 1 point.
ii. The oral test requires 70% and above of the syllables written and the
syllables matching each note with each syllable written and each rhythm
note spoken as 1 point.
b. It will be a part of the test grade only when one of these two things happen:
i. The student completes the proficiency during the mid-term or final exam.
ii. The last day of the semester has passed.
4. Sample attached.
5. Students can keep track of scores on their Student Record Sheet.
6. The student should know whether they have passed the assessment because the teacher
will tell the student how they did and what they need to work on.
7. Blueprint attached.

Rhythm Reading Test
Rhythm Reading Tests will be done during midterm and final exams. The grade that is the higher of the
two will be used for the evaluation. The tests will be compiled in two ways: via written test where the student
writes down the rhythm using music notation after hearing the teacher use rhythm syllables, and via oral test in
which the student sees a rhythm notated on a page and speaks the rhythm using rhythm syllables in a steady
tempo of the students choosing. The teacher will allow each student three tries during each test. The notated
rhythm for the oral test will be given to the students ahead of time. The rhythms for both tests can be in duple or
triple meter. Ties will not be included in the assessment. Informal assessments simulating the two tests will be
done in class to help students prepare. For the written test, each note will represent 1 point. For the oral test each
syllable written is worth 1 point and each syllable spoken correctly in tempo is also worth 1 point.
Below is the rubric used to assess the Rhythm Reading test:
