Grade Level: Third Grade

Standards Objective(s) Assessment

RL-3.1
Ask and answer questions to
demonstrate
understanding of a text,
referring explicitly to the text
as the basis for the answers.

1. The student will be able to create a Tree
Map graphic organizer to sort the main
ideas of the text.
(See attached graphic organizer example).
The student will provide the main ideas of the text as it
relates to girl and boy chores and about schools by
listing the correct answer on the correct branch of the
Tree Map. Examples should be appropriate evidence
from the text.

Materials and Resources:
Copies of Colonial Life booklet for each student
Pencils for each student
Student Binders with a clean sheet of notebook paper

Lesson Introduction
*How will you engage your
students in the topic?
The teacher will open the lesson by stating that in the Colonial times, the chores were divided between
boys and girls. The teacher will also mention that schools were very different during that time as well.
Since the students read the text a few days earlier, the teacher will ask students to recall the chores
that the girls were responsible for and which chores the boys were responsible for? The teacher will
also ask the students why they might think there were different chores for boys and girls in those times.
Procedure The teacher will begin by explaining to the students that they will create a Tree Map to sort the main

ideas in the text. Next, each student will be asked to turn to a clean page in their binders. Then, the
teacher will model how each student should turn their binders sideways before the lesson is started.
She will model drawing a Tree Map on the Promethean Board which will be used to sort the main ideas
from the text. The teacher will ask the students to follow exactly what she draws on the board. Next,
she will Draw a box with the title Colonial Life at the top, and then she will draw three more boxes that
all connect to the top box by a line with Girls Chores, Boys Chores, and School. The teacher will pause
to walk around the classroom to observe the students papers to ensure they are drawn correctly. Then
the teacher will assign the students in groups for each of the three branches on the Tree Map. Next,
the teacher will proceed with the lesson by asking the students to refer to their text to provide the lists
of chores for girls and boys, as well as give the description of the school. The students will raise their
hands to answer questions individually and they will also be able to share out as a group or class. As
the answers are given, each student is instructed to write them down under the correct heading on
their Tree Maps.

Lesson Closure
*How will you summarize the
lesson?
The teacher will wrap the lesson up by asking the students to review their Tree Map graphic organizers
for accuracy as they will be a study tool to use before the quiz the following week.
