Welcome to 5

th
Grade!
5th Grade Overview

Ms. Griffith and I, Ms. Alvino, would like to welcome the children and
their families to 5
th
grade. We are both aware of the enormous responsibility
we have in teaching your children. We will do our best to ensure that every
child in our classes works to the best of his & her abilities and has a rewarding,
educational, and fun senior year.
The 5
th
grade children are the seniors of the school, which brings with
it unique experiences and special privileges. They have a lot of work ahead of
them and will also be preparing for graduation, an important milestone in their
lives. Please help your child succeed by sending him/her prepared for school;
check to see that homework is completed daily and please SIGN it; make sure
your child has all necessary supplies every day (pencils, books, etc.) and that
he/she is well rested and has eaten breakfast (either at home or school); and
finally, please check your childs folder everyday for important notices. We
know that with hard work, dedication, and the help and support of their
families, they will rise to meet the challenges this year will present. If they do
so, they will enjoy some of the special rewards reserved for seniors, such as
Dress Up Fridays, the Senior Trip, and the Senior Dance.

The following is an overview of what your children will be doing in 5
th
grade
this year:

Homework: Homework will be given nightly and are numbered. They will
usually consist of a reading, math, and spelling assignment. We will also
include studying from time to time, as it is an important skill the students
will need throughout their academic careers. We will also send tests home for
parents/guardians to sign and students to return to school.

3o minutes of reading each night & recorded in students Reading Log, as
well as writing a response to their reading in their Reading Response
notebooks.

*Please make homework a priority in your home
*Set aside a specific time and quiet place for homework
**SIGN and check H.W. each night.
*Each H.W. is numbered and the assignment will be written in childrens H.W.
Book, so you can see the number of assignments each night.
*A missed assignment must be made up the following day. Incomplete H.W.
