What is the relationship between craters, calderas, vents, and
magma?
They are all parts of the anatomy of a volcano.
How does a crater lake form? (words and pictures)
Crater lakes are formed when a caldera (large craters that can be
up to 50 km in diameter) is filled with water.
What two factors does a volcanos appearance depend upon?
What characteristics vary among volcanoes?
The type of material that forms the volcano, and the type of
eruptions that occurs.

Cinder-Cone, Composite, Shield
What factors cause differences in size and slope?
Differences in material, vegetation on volcanos slopes, climate,
and eruptive history of volcano.
What is tephra?
Rock fragments thrown into the air during an eruption.
What is a pyroclastic flow?
The rapid movement of gas, ash, and other tephra down the
slopes at high speeds.
Where are most volcanoes found?
At plate boundaries.
Use the maps provided to show: (1) the Circum Pacific Belt and the
Mediterranean Belt where convergent volcanism occur and (2) the
Hawaiian Emperor Volcanic Chain.
How do hotspots form?
When high-temperature plumes of mantle rise towards the
surface, and melt the rock to form volcanoes.
