Name: Number Squeeze Guided Math Groups Date: Nov. 2013
Content Area(s) Math Grade(s): K5 Lesson Domain(s) / Content Cognitive Building mathematical skills with counting and comparing numbers. Learning Goal(s)/ Standard(s)
K.CC.A.1 Count to 100 by ones and tens K.CC.C.6 Identify whether the number of objects in one group is greater than, less than, or equal to the number of objects in another group, eg., by using matching and counting strategies.
Instructional Objectives
Students will be able to identify numbers that are greater than or less than numbers on a number line. Group 1: Numbers will be between 1 and 8 Group 2: Numbers will be between 1 and 10
Assessment (Criteria/Look Fors)
Observe students as they use the number line to identify numbers that are greater than and less than a given number Take anecdotal notes on students ability to determine numbers less than or greater than a given number.
Academic Language Focus
Greater than Less than More than
Questions
What does greater than mean? What does less than mean? What is a number that is greater than 3? What is a number that is less than 7? What number comes after 5? What number comes before 2?
Number line of numbers from 1 through 10 (one per student) Squeeze pieces: greater than piece, less than piece (one set per student)
Time (Total & Specific) Total Time: 30 minutes Group 1 (Green Hearts): 15 minutes Group 2 (Green Circles): 15 minutes 1-2 minutes Introduction 1-2 minutes Demonstration 3-4 minutes 8-10 minutes
Instruction Procedures Introduction Demonstration Participation Practice Procedure will be the same for both groups, however group 1 will focus on numbers 1 through 8 while group 2 focuses on numbers 1 through 10. Introduction -Have student to count number on number line -Ask students to identify numbers greater and less than other numbers Demonstration - Explain game & piece -Piece with leaves above head is to show the number is greater than what is being covered. -Piece with leaves under feet shows the number is less than the what is being covered. - Demonstrate how to place pieces on a number line Participation -Practice game - Tell students Im thinking of a number that is greater than 3 -Number is less than 7 -Number is greater than 5 -Have students identify the number (6) Practice -Teacher chooses number, students ask if it is greater or less than a number on the number line and move pieces to appropriate places. - Repeat as time allows
Closure Today we played a game that helped us practice what greater than and less than mean. We learned to find numbers on our number lines by asking if that number was greater than or less than another number. Student Accommodations We will be working in a small group throughout the activity. If students struggle with determining the correct number I will use questioning or reflective modeling to help the student be successful with the lesson content. Self Reflection
